does it have to be computer security specifically? the course in l.i.t is "computer networks & systems mgmt" (honours degree)with some security modules in year 3,then there is a masters in the following modules...

Security and Digital Forensics, Security and Cryptography,
    Data Communications and Network Technologies,
Digital Forensics and Computer Crime, Enterprise Technology
    Management, Research Project.

    I did it.

A 2:1 grade in your BSc is needed as an entry requirement. The course is a straight 12 months: so a semester, exams, semester, exams, summer practicum. And like most courses in DCU it's fairly taxing and there's always lots of assignments to be getting on with.

Topics covered included Cryptography, Number Theory, Advanced Operating Systems, Biometrics, Network Security, Law / Ethics, Forensic Computing and lots more.

Personally, I found the Forenisc stuff pretty tiresome. But enjoyed learning the Security stuff immensely. Found the Law / Ethics course useful too :)

Definitely the toughest 12 months of college ive ever done with regards to the workload, assignments, exams :/

If you search on the DCU forum, OP, you'll see some other useful threads on this particular course.

Are job prospects good for this course!

Heh, only seen this now. Sorry dude :)

    Job prospects? Absolutely.

The majority of the class graduated (DCU work you hard :/ ) and all of the ppl that I was still in contact with got some great positions (or went traveling & got jobs as soon as they returned) in Security, Forensic comuting, Health IT., Banking at home and abroad.

I also had an offer (which I declined) from the Uni to do further research following on from my end-of-year practicum, which was pretty cool. So it looks like there's lots of opportunities to do further study into security tech stuff that may be linked to their research in their Engineering / Computing Depts.

Remmy, I work in the expanding area of IT security. U should try and figure out what area of IT security you want to work in.

Have a look at the IISP website and the CISSP certification which is seen as the basic driving licence in IT security. (Google these for more info).

If you have a technical background it is worth looking at firewalls, computer forensics and website security. The UK have a wide range of courses, UCL, Glamorgan and RHUL.ac.uk are some of the best.

If you have a less technical background I would look at business continuity, security policies, disaster management etc.

For a flavour of all these, I strongly recommend the CISSP course or even just a the CISSP exam prep book to get a feel. www.itjobswatch.co.uk will give you a good idea of salaries.

    Hope this helps.
