Ethernet Port problem

    Hey guys,

    I have an Advent laptop and the ethernet port isn't working properly. The card is a Realtek RTL8169/8110 Family Gigabit Ethernet NIC.

    I realised there was a problem when two of my friends could network to each other but I couldn't see either of them and they couldn't see me. When I plug in the ethernet cable, the green light comes on in the switch. Windows says the ethernet card is working properly, and when I connect it to the switch it shows the acquiring IP icon.

    I double checked there was a problem getting the router that I connect to the internet with wirelessly and tried using a wired connection. When I did this the internet stopped working.

    I have tried updating drivers but that hasn't done anything, is this just a hardware problem? Is there anything more I could do?

    I'd love to hear any suggestions!

    Sounds like your using dhcp, are you? can you ping the gateway computer or either of your friends pc's?

    Hey, I just found the problem. It was that I hadn't chosen "obtain ip address automatically" in my tcp/ip settings. Thanks a million for your quick reply and your help.
