i got this checklist by email when i booked the test online

Please prepare for your nct by ensuring that:

    please tick

    1. Your car has adequate oil and water.

    2. The boot is empty and seats are clear of all belongings.

    3. The vehicle is reasonably clean (especially the underbody).

    4. The wheel hubcaps are removed (only in the case where wheel nuts are not visible) and the tyres are inflated to the correct pressure.

    5. The engine is in a fit state to be tested e.g. cam belt / timing belt. You will be asked to sign a disclaimer at the test centre.

    6. All seat belts and clips are fully visible (including rear).

    7. We also recommend that you have your lights checked and set prior to the NCT.

    8. Your Vehicle Registration Book, Registration Certificate or Licensing Certificate is with you when you arrive at the test centre.

    9. You have your test fee of €49.00, plus any cancellation fee (if applicable) payable by cash, personal cheque with bankers card, credit card or laser card.

    10. This letter of confirmation is brought to the test centre on the day of your test.

    hope it helps :)

    Some tips:

    (1) Remove hub caps/wheel trims before the test.

    (2) Give the car a wash.

    (3) Buckle up all rear seat belts before the test (especially the one in the middle), so that the tester doesn't have to go rumaging under the seat for the buckles.

    (4) Check all your lights (especially the front side lamps and the lamp(s) over the rear reg plate), and also brake & reverse lights.

    (5) If you smoke, remove any smell of smoke/cigarette butts from the car.

    (6) Check your windscreen wipers, if they are in bad nick, replace them.

Anything other than the above would probably need a mechanic to attend to, like brakes, suspension, emissions, etc.

Some people have a strange aversion to their cars failing the NCT and spend lots of money ensuring they don't. It is so much simpler and cheaper to let the NCTS do the faultfinding!

There probably isn't going to be a definitive list of things to check anyway.
Anything they find which could be considered a safety risk is fair game.

Eg. a few years ago, mine failed on not having a rubber grip on the clutch pedal... it was just bare metal. Also, I didn't have a rubber/plastic fuel cap... there was a proper side door, and a metalic valve for the fuel nozzle, but no fuel cap to trap any fuel vapours.

I just passed the NCT there last week, and noticed that now they're also checking for loose body panels, lights etc. The NCT mechanic is giving all the panels a good push/pull to ensure they're secure.

    regards,
    Owen

Just to add or elaborate on previous advice
-check pedal rubbers, if they are in any way loose try to get them secure. I have used superglue to assist with this :)

-check every bulb in advance of the test, also check them all again an hour before the test if possible. Do not forget the number plate light bulb(s) or the indicator repeaters in the front wings

-check wiper and washers, make sure all the washer jets work and that they are all pointed at the screen

-if you have any chips in your windscreen check them and compare with the requirements and diagrams in the NCT manual

-listen for the slightest blow from the exhaust, if you find any fill with exhaust paste. Might make the difference betwen failing on lambda and passing

-keep fingers crossed that your cat is alright :)

If your car was an ould banger I'd have more suggestions but having seen the pics of yours I reckon it'll breeze through the test
