    Hi all,

I'm just wondering if Windows XP Media Center Edition suports 64bit processors. I have the Intel Core 2 duo E6700 and I'm just curious if it is being fully used by windows.

With this processor its not a problem if its not supported as I have found nothing that has slowed or caused lag on the system yet (in two months).

(except maybe in FFXI when there are a ton of people on screen in high res mode)

Thanks in advance for your help ;)

It certainly does Support 64bit, but i dont think it makes full use of it as MCE is a 32bit OS, as far as I know

Thank you. So does that mean is can run 64 bit code once the software doesn't have to deal with the operating system?

There is no 64-bit version of WinXP MCE, WinXP Home, Pro and MCE are all 32-bit only

The WinXP Pro x64 is the 64-bit version that is capable of making use of the 64-bit element of your CPU not that you'd actually want it unless you are a developer or have a very specific application that benefits from it as most home users have no need for it.

If you want MCE and 64-bit then you need to get the Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit version as that does have MCE built into it and is 64-bit however it's not really suitable for regular users do to application and codec support for 64-bit still being thin on the ground as XP x64 was never really popular and Vista 64-bit is the first big push by MS for 64-bit.

Thanks for a great response. after google for a few hours this is the only place i get a proper answer (seriously, if you search for answers it only talks about vista)

I in no way want to go to vista at the moment. I have a friend with the exact same hardware as me on vista and it is horribley slow and multimedia is slow and stuttery. Maybe when fixes become available i will go over to vista but not to the moment.

For now, my machine is suitably fast enough. But what kind of preformance boost would I get from a 64 bit os?

If you are a general home user the answer is pretty much none.
