Anyone know where to find the cheapest of the cheap? 54Mbps minimum.

I picked up a Belkin one in Argos last week for 30 euro, though I'm sure you can probably get them a bit cheaper elsewhere.

What exactly does the MBPS mean?

I think mine is always 54 but I thought that was just my normal connection.. if I buy a one higher than 54 will it be faster?

    Megabits per second.

For your home network? Sure. The internet? I doubt there's many people in this country who have a connection much faster than 6Mb, nevermind 54Mb :D (although the sustained transfer rate is significantly lower).
Anyway I'm not sure you can get usb adapters that are much faster, although I think Argos had a 128Mbps one. 54Mbps is the norm for wireless home networks at the moment.

Yeah I have Eircom Broadband Home Starter... the one for €25 a month. For the past two weeks I've been losing the signal a lot and we're not sure if it's the laptop or the router. I'm going to ret connect to other wireless connections in Dundalk, maybe outside PC World and see if I can connect. If I can then Eircom will send me a new Router.

This is what it shows for my wireless thingy now...

:o I should have researched first. What's the problem with them? I have been experiencing a few disconnects and that but I only use it on a secondary machine so I don't really care.

OS support is limited. Support in general is non-existent if you do encounter an issue. So many of them are simply dodgy - poorly made, atrocious software, and don't reach the throughput that you should expect... the latest round: http://consumerist.com/consumer/class-actions/some-belkin-wireless-owners-may-be-entitled-to-full-refunds-271213.php

It was for an old PC I hoped to resurrect - but I've just realised the PC's banjaxed so it makes no difference now

True, could have got an internal card, but Ive had USB ones before and they can be used on multiple PC's without opening up the case.

Most shops have various brands for €34~50. I needed one in a hurry. So I bought a D-link one in PC World as it had a dock with it. €40. The Dock saves people knocking them out of a USB slot and breaking them. I've found the Netgear USB sticks to be not great. No problem with their routers though.
