Vietnam visas

    I'm trying to get some more information about visas for Vietnam online.

    Some sites say I need to send my passport off to the consulate others say the visas can be obtained at the airport upon arrival.

    Can anyone clarify this?

    You have to obtain your visa for Vietnam before you arrive. I'm going in June 2008 and the guys in Trailfinders said you have to have visas organised prior to arrival or else you won't get in. That goes for China too. I'm not sure what the process is for getting the visa beforehand but it has to be done.

    I got mine in the Vietnamese embassy in London, from what I remember it took about 5 days. I'm sure there is a thread around about being able to obtain Vietnam Visas in Bangkok. BTW, I didn't like Vietnam, Cambodia is far nicer.

    Technically, yes, you do need to get it before going by sending your passport to London, which takes a week. In practice, you can just arrive and get one at the airport; but why bother taking the risk of something going wrong over there?
    I got mine through London just to be on the safe side, but when I arrived at the airport others were getting them on the spot.

    You can only get a visa on arrival if you've got an invitation letter which you can get from a travel agent. You won't even be allowed on a flight into Vietnam without either a valid visa or invitation letter.

    If you're not pushed for time the easiest thing is to deal with the embassy in London.
