Modem Init Strings

Hi, this board is fascinating and I have learned a lot compared to when I started, I was pretty clueless.

I'm hoping someone could answer two questions please

I'm thinking of buying one of the CECT dual SIM phones.

It took a lot of frustration to get my Motorola, Palm and Meteor all communicating, what I need to know is.

Where would I get the settings for Modem Init string? Is it different depending on what cellphone company you are using for your ISP or is it always the same for the same phone no matter what network you are on?

Also if I get an init string that works for Windows, would it work on Palm?

In other words is the init string more of a telephony thing or an operating system thing?

Sorry if these are silly questions....I hope someone would be kind enough to help.

Do you even know why you need modem initialization strings? Unless there is a specific reason or you are getting that mixed up with something else then you don't need them.

There is a space in the Palm connectino setup wizard for them.

Also Meteor's guide to setting up a PC connection using GPRS suggests settings for them.

Therefore I assumed you need them.

I also read an article on the net that said that not using them or using the wrong ones can degarde the performance of a modem

    Thanks
