Passport application

I sent off for an Irish passport (have citizenship through descent) and got a call from them today. I sent my mum's birth certificate but they said they need to see my parent's marriage certificate too. I didn't enclose it as a) I don't have it and b) don't see why my parent's marital status is relevant.

Anybody know why it should be?

If you are claiming through your mother, her name on her birth certificate needs to match her name on your birth certificate. More than likely, she is referred to in her married name. It's just procedure to link names on certificates. It's got nothing to do with her marital status. If you aren't Irish born, you should expect to have a few more complications when applying for a passport. It's only fair really. Passports are very important documents.

My own birth certificate gives my mother's married and maiden names.
