It was, unlike today, one of the hottest days of that Summer. It was a Saturday. It was 16 years ago. It was part 4 of 4. Yes, on the 6 July 1991, the famous Dubln v Meath saga came to an end, with that famous late equalising goal by Kevin Foley and then the lead point David Beggy.

I was at all 4 games and what a rollercoaster ride it was. It showed what excitement and drama that Gaelic Games can provide. Through June and into July of 1990, all of Ireland watched the World Cup in Italy. Through June and into July of 1991, all of Ireland watched what was just the first round tie of the Leinster championship in Croke Park. June 2, June 9, June 23rd and July 6th were the key dates. On all 4 of them, Dublin should have won. :o

On Friday the 5th of July, one of my sisters got married. All that week we were telling her that there would be a very big event that weekend, and she was getting married too. :)

In their next game, Meath played Wicklow. Wicklow gave them a great match and it also ended in a draw, with Meath winning the replay. Had Wicklow beaten them on that first day, a lot of people would have put it down to tiredness on behalf of Meath after their 4 matches against Dublin. Having been at the match, I'd have to say that that would have been just an excuse as Wicklow had a very good team and played very well on that day.

I bought the DVD "The Royal Battle", last Christmas. There are 2 CDs. The second one has the last game in full. I have watched the first one, but not the second one yet. :)

Meath went on to play 10 championship games that summer, but us Dubliners had the satisfaction of seeing Down beat them in the All-Ireland final. :) They didn't beat us for a few years after that either, including a real hammering we gave them in the 1995 Leinster Final, the year of our last All-Ireland. :D

Cheers for the reminder of the greatest month of my GAA supporting life, and that includes the four All Irelands I've been lucky enough to see my county win:cool:

I can never understand why soccer fans laugh at GAA replays and suggest we should have penalty shootouts, while at the same time complaining that losing by a penalty is a hard and unfair way to lose. Others go on about replays being a money-making racket but the drama sagas like this and the recent one in Munster bring is well worth the money IMO.

Pity I wasn't old enough to appreciate this particular one - I must see if I can find those DVDs.

Another bad day today. Reports have it that Graham Geraghty will tonight apologise to Colm Coyle for the recent incident and will then re-join the Meath squad. You can hear the apology now:

"I'm sorry Colm. I know that the others in the team look up to me as an inspiration, and what I did was terrible. I know I have to lead by example. I promise that I'll try to hit him much harder next time."

Still a bit of doubt this morning. Obviously Colm Coyle's response to the above apology must have been along the lines of "Trying to hit harder next time is just not good enough. You have to be sure to. You know full well that to be on a Meath team that after fouling a player you should be disappointed to have only got a red card. Permanent disablement of the player and a lifetime ban from the game should be your minimum target. Now go away and don't come back here trying to get on this squad until you are prepared to meet our standard."

Ah I remember those games. They were first Dublin games I went too as wee teenager and since then I have probably only missed a few games, thats including living in England. I have the DVD but haven't got around to watching it. My mate who I have no managed to convert into a GAA fan doesn't know about those wonderful/terrible games. I think I will make him watch the DVD. Who remembers the HILL16 chant in those games at a certain Meath fullback?:D

Welcome back BB after your sabbatical, I missed our little sparring rounds !

Reminds me of the time someone asked Colm Coyle (in a local pub) what it was like to make the lonely walk after Meath's bruiser with Mayo in '96.

"Once the job is well done, that's the main thing".

Thats TomMc I missed it to.Its good to be back.Won't ever cross that line again.

I will watch those links later.I've tipped Meath to win this Saturday so no sparring rounds this weekend Tom.:D

We won't need too much luck,we are certainly good enough to give Laois a hiding.

Good to see you here Blackbelt and probably for real on Sunday.

I can assure you Aedh Baclamh that I am well past my teens. I had cleared them even back at the time of the 4 match saga. My match going days started back in the 70s. So as I've mentioned before, I've seen a lot teams play. While I've seen dirty players and teams from plenty of counties, my own included, Meath certainly have had the worst.

Meath's Greats were Hardy, more than dirty, with the exception of you know who. Mick Lyons for example, a legend - I was reminded of his style again, everytime I watched Franco Baresi play for Milan or Italy.:D

Funny thing lads, back in the 80's & 90's despite the intense rivalry, Meath & Dublin were the only two teams who took defeat like real men. They may have stripped lumps out of each other from time to time, no quarter asked or given, but whoever won out in the end, earned the respect of the other. Colm O'Rourke taught me at the time and we use wind him up in class about Gerry Hargan.:D They were the only teams won did not moan when they were beaten and start making excuses and kicking up a fuss - we were robbed etc, blaming refs etc. Virtually every other county would have GAA people on the sunday game or Des Cahill's Monday night radio show ranting and raving about how they were hard done by.

Things are a little different now. Most counties now look at themselves for their shortcomings and not for excuses. You have got to learn to accept defeat, learn from it and come back more determined than ever. I'm hoping for a rematch. I hope I see a Meath v Dublin AI Final some day, before my numbers up.

Ah come off it we don't have the monoply on dirty play.

Em isn't that your manager. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sC01u7IbZF4

Most certainly Meath do not have the monopoly on dirty play, but they have more than their fair share.

As to the video, well yes that it is the Dublin manager, but he wasn't playing in that clip and in any case, it was a fair shoulder. :p

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,742 ✭✭✭blackbelt

Yes it was totally fair.Proper use of the shoulder. It was one of those "howya buddy, welcome to Croke Park" type shoulders.:D

Man that's sad. You're really that old and you continue to harp on about this like a kid in school? Really, get a grip. Dirty players everywhere. On the Meath team, Dublin team...on my own local team...I'm not saying Dublin are worse than Meath or that Meath are worse than Dublin, because, um, I'm not childish.

You'll be glad to know Aedh Baclamh, that of the people that turned up to today's inaugural GAA Boards Beers, I was the oldest there, by a long way. With Meath still hanging in there, they could yet get to the quarter finals. Whether it happens or not, you'll be welcome to join the young folk, and me, at future GAA Boards Beers. Up the Dubs.:)
