Hey guys, I don't know much about wireless tech tbh so I have come here for advice. Basically I am on Irish Broadband 3mb and I am looking for an decent yet affordable router, mainly for connecting to an xbox 360 and a laptop. I'd appreciate any suggestions as I haven't much knowledge on the topic.

    Thanks

I have the same IBB and use a WRT54G from Linksys. Works a treat. Although I don't have an Xbox, I use the wireless to connect a couple of desktops and laptops. Good range (router at front of house upstairs, can get signal on back garden patio) and easy to setup/config.

I have IIB in the bedroom upstairs but want to move my computer to another room or the attic. Then there may also be a laptop coming into the house which may need connecting as well. I am thinking of the pack in PCWORLD or EBAY which contain a router, and usb dongle thingy that goes into the usb port rather than using the ethernet card .

Between routers and wireless access points, I am slightly confused.

What is the difference? and some of them on ebay say suitable for ntl or virgin only. What about the ones eircom has cheap. Are they compatible.

    What about Irish Broadband?

To put it simply, I have a static IP address on a 3 meg connention. The cable goes straight into my ethernet card. I want to put this into a transmitter so the USB dongle or a laptop can pick it up in the house.

    ANY help is much appreciated.

    Thanks

The difference is that some "routers" are actually dsl modems combined with a (wireless) router. So they are only suitable for people with DSL broadband using the phone line. The eircom one you mentioned is such an example and is unsuitable for IBB.

Not sure what brand the pack you refer to is, but if it's Belkin don't buy it. They're truely useless.

Stick to something that is made by Linksys, Netgear, Dlink. If in doubt post the model number up here and someone will tell you if it's good to buy or not.

irlrobins, thanks for the recommendation. I see from some of the reviews that the linkys wrt54g has been out since 2004 and tbh it looks a tad sh*t. Is there a newer version, with more features etc.

Would this be suitable for Irish Broadband

Yes it's been out for a few years but they release new versions of it (I have a V2 but there is a V5 out now). And who cares about looks, half the time the router is stuck somewhere it can't be seen. What's important is how it performs....

Dlink should work but to get the most out of it you'd need a n card. Otherwise you'll just connect at the lower speed of 54Mbps.

    Thanks again for the info.

The linksys wrt54g is going for e59 plus shipping on komplett.ie http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.aspx?sku=306148

Tbh I'd rather spend that bit extra and get a router with a strong and wide range that'll do its job hassle free. Any suggestions for one around e100, on Irish Broadband.

    Thanks
