Is uncreasing upload speed worth it?

In the UK at the moment using blueface.ie

I currently have an 8mb down 768kb up link . The router I use (Draytek 2800VG) has QoS and reserves 25% of the bandwith for VoIP traffic.

Work being the generous people they are have finally decided to pay for my broadband connection so I am thinking of switching to a new provider that is arriving in the area soon.

They have 2 options I am interested in:

    1: 24mb down 1.3 mb up
    2: 24mb down 2.5mb up

Option 2 is £15 more and i am wondering if it is worth the extra money for a better call qualiy, or if I will not notice the difference between 1.3mb up and 2.5 mb up?

I would have to pay the extra £15 but dont mind if it will improve my call quality. In general the quality is ok, but some international calls can be slightly echoy.

    Any ideas out there?

Increading your upload won't increase your quality, unless you had very low quality to begin with (<250).

It would only mean you could do more things on your internet connection at the same time as being on a call.

Thanks for the reply matrim, thats what I thought. I did notice an improvement in quality when I went from 400kb to 768kb, but I hav the feeling that I while I might notice something with a jump to 1.3mb I would not notice any difference about this.

Guess I just have to decide if i am going to get it for the bragging rights or not :D

Suppose you could use the "redundant" upload bandwidth to send decent quality video to all back in the green isle - if you had a decent videocam . . .

Might want to do a trace route back to the Blueface server from your existing SP and see how they get back (probalby a peer in LINX) see the number of hops and then see if you can get info on the new SP. Latency isn't as big an issue as jitter and if you're going to add additional hops expect it to get worse.

On the video side - if you see that Yellow round thing in the sky could you send some images of it :-)
