I've gone for 2 interviews in the past 2 days. both went pretty well and I'm confident about both of them. the one i had today wants to get the position wrapped up by tonight or early tomorrow morning. but I'm not sure when the other position, one which would be my 1st choice as it is only 5 minutes from my house, will be decided. i need a new job asap, so now I'm faced with a possible scenario where i could get a job offer tonight for my 2nd choice job without hearing about my 1st choice.

any suggestions on how to handle this situation if it arises?

can i ask to think about the 2nd choice job? but it looks like he wants the position filled quickly. or should i just say yes but delay signing any contract and hold out for the other one.

i would work for either company, but obviously i have a preference. any help from someone who's been in a similar position would be great as this is my first time dealing with this. thanks

I think you should take the offer that's going to run out soon. Then down the line you can leave and return to the other place nearer to your home with a bit of experience.

Accept the first job but say you need to serve a period of notice and cant start for 1/2 weeks. I think most jobs wont require you to sign the contract until you actually start work.

Should you get offered your second choice, tell them that you have already been offered a position so you need a few days to weigh up both offers. Then you should quickly get in touch with your first choice company, telling them that you want to enquire about how far gone they are in their interviewing process. Explain to them that you have just been offered a good position, which you have to respond to shortly, but are more interested in working for them. Your first choice may be willing to escalate things quickly and make you an offer (if they already have you shortlisted, and depending on how many positions they have open). If they don't do this for you then you should proceed with accepting your second choice offer.

I agree, honestly is the best policy.

If you do get an offer from your 2nd preference company, then ask for a couple of days to think about it, tell them you're waiting to hear back from another company. You could say they're closer or handier for you, don't say they look like a better company ;)

Then chase up your first preference company and tell them you had an offer, and need a decision a.s.a.p. or you'll have to accept the other offer.

    regards,
    Owen
