Dell 510m laptop harddrive replacement

The harddrive in my sisters laptop is on it's last legs. I took it out following the rather good instructions on Dell's website and got the make and model.

I'd a look on the dell site for a replacement and the only one that I found was this.

What I'd like to know is whether any ata-100 2.5" harddisk will work or, given the rather strict size and shape constraints a laptop imposes, is it safer to get the dell one?

Yes almost any IDE or ATA 100 2.5" drive will work, the only thing to watch for is the height of the drive, although I wouldn't think that is a problem anyway. The dell drive is a crazy price! Komplett have a 100gb for €67 here...

It should work no bother. :)

Best thing to do is open the dell up , and measure the height or thickness if you like , off the drive , and komplett are sure to have a suitable replacement at a more realistic price than Dell.

If you're looking for a little performance increase [and more heat!], try a 7,200 rpm hard drive.

Here's one I'll be using as a replacement in an ageing Dell if they sort of their stock management .

Thanks, I didn't fancy having to fork out for the dell one. I checked the dimensions listed against the ones listed and they seem fine. Reassuring to get a more informed opinion though :)
