My family have sky in the house and we have a quad LNB on the dish. I'm thinking of running a wire from the dish into my room. Just wondering does it have to be a sky box that I would connect to it to get a number of basic channels or what would be my other options here?

Suggestions for where to buy such a box would also be greatly appreciated.

It doesn't have to be a Sky box. You could get a Free To Air (FTA) satellite receiver, which would also give you the free channels.

You can get these in most electrical shops, or check the sticky thread.

The advantage of FTA boxes, is the ability to arrange the channels in whatever order you want, delete channels, and have a few Favourites lists. It's let down though by only having now and next programme information.

A Skybox can give you listings for a week, will allow you to use interactive services like BBCi or Sky News Active for example, and allow you to use a Freesat From Sky viewing card (unlocks C4, five, five US, five Life, Sky3). However a Skybox's downside is that it'll list all the channels you can't get either, like Sky Movies etc, which can be a nuisance.

And the FTA box will work off Astra or whatever our home dish is set to. Sorry I'm a total moron when it comes to things like this! Essentially... I wouldn't need to send the dish off kilter for the rest of the house to do any of this?

    Another stupid question:

Can you hook a freeview box up through a sky dish?

johnfas.....in ur post 04/07/07 at 23.19 you ask the same question as your original post. To which byte had already answered.

Yes you can connect your FTA box via your Sky disk as long as you have a free socket on your LNB

A Freeview box will NOT work with a Sky dish. A Free To Air satellite receiver, however, will work, as I already said.

Freeview is the name used for UK's DTT service.
