The man is a complete joke. I know, 11 bracelets etc. But allow me to highlight his complete moronic status with the following info taken from worldseriesofpoker.com

    Tue, 03 Jul 2007 15:02:17
    Phil Hellmuth Has Been Eliminated
Phil moved in the last of his stack under the gun with A9, and was called by a player with AK. The board of 4QT8J gave Phil a straight, but his opponent held the higher straight and knocked Phil out. "I can't believe it," Phil said when the hand was over. "I played ten times as good as the rest of the field. This was the first time in two days I got my money in with the worst of it." A few players at Phil's table politely disputed his "ten times as good" claim. Phil's out, but today was his record-setting 63rd World Series of Poker cash.

Perhaps then Phil, you explain this:

    Mon, 02 Jul 2007 18:34:43
Phil Hellmuth Takes the Pot and Knocks One Out
Phil Hellmuth bet 1,000 from early position, the big blind pushed all-in for 5,550 more and Hellmuth called. Hellmuth showed A8 against his opponent's TT. The board came A82K5, Hellmuth took the pot with two pair and his opponent headed for the door.

I only know about this as the 'other player' was Eoghan O'Dea, otherwise I prob wouldn't have noticed. Makes you wonder just how much bs this guy has been spewing.

Just to be sure...has anyone actually counted his bracelet wins...this number 11 seems very round ;)

On the Party Poker Premier League last night he admitted that a couple of years he was duped into believing AKo was statistically better than AKs AIPF. At the time he had 9 bracelets. The man is a freak. Any time he went out he'd come back to the green room and bitch and moan about hands. His recollection of them was often completely different to the way they actually happened.

Brilliant line from Devilfish "Are you flying home or walking?" implying the man can walk on water, which is totally true. Check out Zeejustin's blog about how the guy can basically say whatever he wants to people at the table at the WSOP without getting penalties.

I've often wondered what I would do if I ever got sitting at same table as Phil Hellmuth, since he seems to thrive on his notoriety, would putting the dumb Paddy act on and pretending that you never heard of him really p1ss him off :p

ODea said he was taunting him into calling the 1k bet, so ODea was like "**** it, I know Im ahead" and sticks it all in. Obviously not standing up to Hellmuths wonderous A8. What was it again Phil, "If luck wasnt involved, I'd win em all"?????

    OR
Start with " I know you , don't I , you're that great pro, in fact in my opinion you're the greatest of all time, don't tell me your name,.... I'll get it.......... THAT'S IT ....

    DANIEL NEGREANU............"

I think he may implode there and then on the spot

There was a good thread on here a week or two ago about how manaical, even delusional self-belief may be necessary to succeed at the highest level at anything. Hellmuth steps over the line into obnoxiousness because of how he treats other players but his self-belief in and of itself isn't a bad thing and his results demonstrate it.

He plays like 300 tournaments a year.

I think he's still running good or "on form" as he likes to call it himself.

He may be totally obnoxious, and the type of person you'd never associate with in a million years, but you have to agree that Devilfish v Hellmuth matches are highly entertaining.

QFT", internet slang meaning "quoted for truth". This term applies on forums and posting boards where users can edit their posts, thus the QFT holds the poster to their original statement. It is also used to express agreement with a previous poster's statement and validate its veracity.

i think he's invaluable to the poker world.

did anyone see that small doc on him where it shows his home life??

funny stuff. he's all about surrounding himself with positive energy and what not.

he has post-its all over his house. the funniest one was one that read 'Great things happen to you' on his bathroom mirror.

    what a man

I saw him on The Full Tilt on Setanta Sports last night, he has also been on Late Night Poker a fair bit. Personally I don't like him, but, you can't question his ability, in fact he has won a tourney in the WSOP already.

He is married to a psycologist, and he seems to get great reads on players, and I would say that most of his persona is an act. I would be more likely to play agressive against him than I would be against another player (say Negriano (sp.)).

lol @ people ragging on hellmuth. most poker players exaggerate how often they get bad beats, what happened to them in this hand or that. it's human nature to relate events heavily towards your own perspective, hellmuth is particularly guilty of this. why so many people berate him is beyond me, he is a very good player and he's a bit of fun to watch on tv too. i guess internet forums are famous for people sitting at home making fun of famous people, so this one is bound to have a few threads like that.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 9,828 ✭✭✭gosplan

He is arguably the best NLH MTT player ever. He did have a headstart on others though and the fields are much bigger now then when he won his first few bracelets.

Anyway, I don't doubt his ability but the guy has zero charisma.

Watch the first series if High Stakes Poker and Negraneu getting outdrawed repeatedly until he's down about 600K. He takes it all well and with great character and doesn't piss and moan at all.

if Phil loses, he comments how terrible his opponents are and how lucky they got and when he does the same, it's all "I can dodge bullets baby".

    An Arse, no doubt

Having read and seen many of his plays I can safely say that he is definitely not anywhere close to being the best.

i have watched alot of hellmuth lately as i am constantly underwhelmed by his play but have had to be silent wen people bring up his record.

basically from my own perception phil hellmuth is an average player who is very adept at playing against large fields of weak opponents, he gets a lot of chips easy from these guys too just so they can have a story to tell when they go home about how they lost all their chips to phil hellmuth, or they overplay their hands against him cuz they wanna take him down and have braggin rights in their local club for a long time!

its very obvious to any player with half a brain that hellmuth is not the greatest, but his image works for him, even guys like me,who dont really rate him are continuosly talking about him!! i admire john juanda's play and daniel negranus play and patric antonius's play,i actually like the devilfish to be honest!!! but i spend more time discussin phil hellmuth then anybody else!

i think everybody shud read zee justins blog!! Zee Justin = Da Man!!!

ha that zeejustin's blog is class (for a cheating scumbag that is)

    sample Hellmuth quote:

“You know kid, sometimes I bet the flop, and sometimes I check. I don’t check because I’m weak. I check because I want to see you bet, and then I decide what to do. Sometimes I raise, sometimes I just call, and sometimes I’ll even fold! That’s what great players do.”

lol, I must use that one some day...

he also turns up to deep stack tournaments 3-4 levels late. Does this give him an advantage against people who have become short stacked?

I know a number of pro players do this. but more than strategy its down to them playing Chinese Poker till 7 in the morning.

you should see his latest video blog.,..and how he managed to lay down QQ pf when it seemed a pretty standard laydown. he makes out tthat he is the only player capable of doing it.

I think the standard of NL play is rising rapidly and maybe Hellmuth is just not as far ahead as he used to be, but doesn't realize it.
