    hi guys
i've read a lot about the sonic youth and their huge influence on the indie rock music, so I think it's time for me to begin to listen to some of their stuff...
so here it comes the problem: where to begin?
there are more than 20 albums to choose from, any suggestion ?

    tnx

Daydream Nation or Dirty would be good places to start

Yeah, anything from the late 80s/early 90s is a safe place to start. The right mixture of songs and freakout. Then venture out into the older and newer material, if you're into things being adventurous, raw and loud then all of the early material is gold. I find their newer stuff more hit and miss but when they hit, they still hit hard.

I'd recommend Goo from 1990. Some classic songs there: Dirty Boots, Tunic (Song for Karen) - a tribute to Karen Carpenter; Kool Thing - the single they released with Public Enemy's Chuck D. All great numbers.
Oh, and it's Sonic Youth, not "the" Sonic Youth. I'm not pedantic - it actually makes a big difference. :)

Straight in at the deep end Any of the SYR releases to start with....

    only jokin :-)

Daydream Nation, Dirty, Goo of the classics
and Rather Ripped and Murray Street are good new ones.
If you like, then move around the earlier stuff and some later stuff.
Enjoy, Well done on your choice of listening material :-)

They've a good selection of MP3s on their site, you could find out which ones you like and go from there.

i usually give murray street to friends who want to get into sonic youth, seems to work best. very accessible (for a sy album anyway), but still has traditional sonic youth noise/guitar experimentation.

having said that, you can't go far wrong with daydream nation or goo to start with either...

My first SY album was "Washing Machine" possibly the most underrated SY album of all time.

Took me a while to understand what was going on but it well worth it when you do.

    Check out Skip Tracer

"A thousand leaves" is also quite brilliant.

    Anyway good luck.

I liked EVOL, I remember it took a while to get into it, but I think a good place to start is with Sister.....great album

Or you could wait until early next year and start with their 'Starbucks Only' release.

    Why Sonic Youth? Why?

    Why indeed! That's really odd.

I started with Daydream Nation, but despite the world drowning it in gush, I'd say Dirty or Goo would be better to begin with.

Yeah, go with Dirty or Goo first.

Daydream Nation is hard to get into, but when you do get into it, it's amazing.

yeah i would say Goo - Kool Thing, Cinderellas Big Score, Disappearer, Titanium Expose....all brilliant songs!
Dirty is really good aswell, daydream nation is good but slightly overrated imo.
thats all i have so far,im thinking of buying Sister next coz its meant to be realy good...
