Why is my Internet Explorer not Working???

    Hi Guys.

Wondering if someone out there could help me or point me in the right direction. Bought a Dell PC with Windows XP last Xmas and it came with the free upgrade to Vista.

I installed Vista a few months back and ever since then I've been having trouble displaying web pages. I'm using Dial Up (Downside of living in the back arse of nowhere) and it seems to connect with eircom fine but when I try to view a website through IE, it just brings up a page not diaplyed message (Straight Away, it doen't even think about it). Other times I leave it for a while, try it again and it works fine but even this seems to be happening less and less now.

Any Ideas on what I can do or check. Am pretty sure its an IE Issue as network doesn't seem to drop its connection.

It's beginning to wreck my head now because the PC is in my Folks place and they keep ringing me asking me what the problem is :(

Any Advice would be great (You may have guessed, I don't know much about these things)

    Cheers.

Did you check the firewall? I don't know Vista, but in the control panel (or Vista equivalent) there should be a security center icon, check the firewall settings and in particular the exceptions to make sure IE is allowed to access the Internet.

Download firefox, see if you can acsess the sites you want through it, if it still doesn't work you will know for sure that it's IE playing up.

Can you check what is in the Tools- Internet options- Connection Tab

Possible it is trying to get a connection to the internet through something other than the dial up connection.

Vista has IE7 and this operates in " Protected Mode " by default , so the first thing to try is to turn " Protected mode " off. Heres a link ,

    http://journals.aol.com/theradioblog/aolradio/entries/2007/02/25/one-vista-solution-turning-off-protected-mode/987

This link specifically is about a problem with online radio while protected mode is on , so you only need to follow the first few steps ,

Protected mode is a little too protective , and blocks a lot of sites , so turn it off and you should notice a big difference , especially over dial-up.

Not sure why protected mode would be an issue here.

From the post, i suspect that IE does not detect an internet connection.

Protected Mode just Sandboxes the activities of IE to protect the rest of the computer.

It will not block sites, although some sites which require an external program may have issues.

First you need to try and get a connection to a standard site such as yahoo or microsoft.

I had this same problem a few months back & it drove me mad. I ended up downloading Firefox on my work PC & installing it at home which worked fine.

Anyway I waited & waited for Microsoft to send out a hotfix but nothing came so last week I decided to look back into it. It turns out that my Firewall (Kaspersky) was blocking any action initiated by iexplore.exe. Finding where my Firewall kept it's various program rules was the hardest part.

So I just told it to unblock iexplore.exe & I was back in action. The silver lining is that I got to discover Firefox so now I all use IE7 for is Dell updates.
