Good. I'm planning on buying it for the comedy value alone :D

My understanding is that the game starts in Ireland, but it's a gateway to some kind of fantasy dimension that happens to be in an Irish town, and it's this fantasy dimension that most of the game is set in. But I could be wrong, the trailer does make it look interesting for the comedy value..

In the mean time, if you'd like some comedy Irish computer game shenanigans, check out Clive Barker's Undying. It's a good game, a bit scary and riddled with the dodgiest Irish accents since Far & Away :D

Well, anything with Halloween in it is Irish be default, no?
Although perhaps a Resistance sequel set here would be cool, battling creatures form another world through the mens dept of Clerys, outside the GPO, out towards Malahide, maybe a skirmish with some sort of plasma cannons in Drogheda, or maybe not.

wasn't there an unreal 2004 mod that did that?

Sounds good, I'd love to see Test Drive Unlimited redone with Ireland as the Island, or, more realistically, The Isle Of Man, that would be sweet.
You know, as you race around recreations of New York, London, Edinburgh, shoot stuff to bits up and down Britain and the US, wouldn't it be nice to play a game in a place that we Irish know and love, even if its a DM level in Halo3 of the Guinness brewery in St. James Gate!

Perhaps Full Auto would be a better choice then.

So anyone pick up Folklore this weekend? I've played through a couple of chapters now and I have to say I'm really liking it. The voice acting isn't too bad actually, apart from the scarecrow...

I wasn't too sure about the demo but on the strength of reviews I decided to give it a chance and glad I did. The demo made it feel like a straightforward hack and slash, but the full game is at least 50% if not more story telling and exploring, interspersed with the battling. The fights I'm still unsure of, though the couple of major boss battles I've faced were a lot of fun. The typical fighting is a bit repetitive though against normal enemies but you're never stuck fighting too long without reaching an interesting cut scene or boss.

But it's the story side of things I'm finding really interesting. It seems to cover very dark and mature subject matter for a game (I don't want to spoil anything but most of the story so far is about how a death has torn apart a family), while at the same time throwing you into some beautiful and imaginitive fantasy locations. I'm loving the music too so it all comes together really well.

My main issue with the game is the two character system. It's split up into chapters, and you need to play each chapter with both of the main characters. The problem is, once you've done it once, you are really retreading the same ground as the second character just to uncover those one or two extra tidbits of story that were missed from the other perspective. After effectively doing the first chapter twice, I think I'm going to just stick with Ellen for the rest of the game, then take Keats through again from the start, at least that way everything won't be so fresh in my mind when I repeat it.

Well, sort of. The village is named Doolin but they never actually say where in the world it is (at least not so far in the game) - it's obviously Ireland based on the accents, references to Irish mythology and details like the recognisable 'telefon' phonebox.

But it's really just a fictional village. It's only called Doolin in the Euro and American release, it was originally called Lemrick in Japan. And they've taken creative license as needed for the game. I'd say people from other countries could easily play through it without knowing it was set in Ireland at all unless they could tell from the accents. After all, references to Samhain or Banshees could just as easily be fictional video game fantasy if you hadn't heard them before.

Just reading this preview of Folklore on Gamespot http://www.gamespot.com/ps3/rpg/monstercarnival/news.html?sid=6173488&mode=recent and as you can see it seems to suggest the game is set in England...

Start of the third paragraph - "The Irish shoreline that you get to explore..."

What made the decision to buy for me was the IGN "best of E3" sticker on the front of the box. From the bit I've played so far it's pretty good...

The translation work in this game is so frustrating!

There's a really good story in there, but at times the dialogue gets so corny and they work there way from one conclusion to another and you've no idea how they got there.

When you do follow it, it's a really good story though. One of the better ones I've come accross.

Well the box over here in Australia says "Doolin, a sleepy coastal village on the west coast of Ireland." It even has a the general lay out of Doolin right on some of the art work inside the box.

One of the trailers a while back also showed a letter addressed to someone in Dublin. So it was intended to be set specifically in an Irish village - although obviously the game seems to depart from realism pretty quickly ;)
