From the BBC Doctor who page.

    "Step Back In Time
Kylie Minogue on board for Titanic festive special.

We're all feeling lucky, lucky, lucky that Kylie Minogue
is to take a major lead role in the hour-long Doctor Who
Christmas special, to be broadcast in December 2007.

Especially for you, Kylie will be travelling light
years to join David Tennant for the episode,
Voyage Of The Damned, which starts filming
    in July in Cardiff.

"We are delighted and excited to announce
that Kylie Minogue will be joining the Doctor,"
revealed Executive Producer and lead writer Russell T Davies.

"Doctor Who Xmas specials are always a joy and
we feel very confident that this will be the
most ambitious and best Christmas episode yet."

"It is an incredible thrill to be joining David and
the entire Doctor Who production for this year's
Christmas special," added Kylie. "Doctor Who
enjoys a unique history and it is going to be
very exciting to be a part of that."

The production team has also confirmed that the story,
written by Russell, will follow on directly from the ending
of series three where viewers witnessed the Titanic crash
    through the Tardis wallså

Full details are currently under wraps, with more
information to be announced shortly. We'll confide
in you as soon as we can. The fourth series of Doctor Who
will be back in the Spring of 2008"

That sort of stuff happens all the time when you're a Timelord.

Who do you guys think She'll be playing in this episode?

I heard people saying that She'll be The Rani.

My personal opinion is that Shes just gonna be a passenger on board the Titanic that helps the Doctor sort out what ever happens in the episode.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,216 ✭✭✭✭monkeyfudge

Well it looks like The Rani might be back as RTD hinted that the hand that picks up the Masters ring at the end of the last episode belongs to her.

But he's also said they won't be returning to that any time soon, so an appearance in season "4" is probably not on the cards.

They probably wouldn't blow a big villain on an Xmas special anyway as they tend to be rather silly affairs.

I imagine that she'll be a singer on board the Titanic that the Doctor encounters.

RTD is a big Kylie fan I imagine and this is just more opportunistic stunt casting. And yes, I'm well aware that Kylie claims to be a big fan, but seriously.

However, points will be won back if she fits in a 'Neighbours' joke or some reference to Chun Li. If you're going to go camp and over-the-top, let's do it right!

    She was Cammy.

I'd rather have a Time Bandits reference myself.

She's going to be a waitress. Of course RTD is a big fan and I read somewhere that the costumes that her dancers wore on her 2002 tour were inspired by some Who Villain. Which just sounds great.

I think the thing is that (like the Master said ha ha) all the demographic buttons are pressed. The pink audience love Kylie she is a gay icons and all the aul lads (like me) will be sozzled with booze and will leer at her arse for an hour.

Do we care if she can act? We have suffered Bonnie Langford in the past and survived, we're hard enough to handle this. :D

More to the point is this the third story where the Doctor is involved with the Titanic?

Well remember... Billie was a sh*t pop star as well.

Some of 'em do. Not all. I'm indifferent...

Well, to be fair, Kylie was an actor before she became a singer. I don't doubt that she'll be able to do her job but it's definitely a case of stunt casting and that's what many people disliked about the show as it headed towards its first end in '89.

Fourth if you can the Doctor Who novelizations - making the first, seventh, eighth and tenth Doctors running around the ship at some point.

They were based on Torchwood's interpretation of cybermen. *shudder*

RTD casting Kylie on the xmas special? Someone should tell him just how pathetic buying yourself Christmas presents actually is.

Maybe in the next season the Doctor will travel back in time and meet Judy Garland.

I take your point, it's just that the reaction of the likes of Richard Arnold and also feedback I have been seeing on other forums made me generalise sorry about that.

So looking forward to Season 4 then? :)

No problemo - I fully believe that and reckon RTD probably does himself!

You know since Catherine Tate's been announced as the new companion, I suddenly find myself almost okay with Kylie (relatively). At least Kylie makes sense in the context of an Xmas special, and she's either genuinely a fan of the show or at least got the marketing skills to make it seem so. So Kylie for companion in Season 5?

I thought he said before that he cannot visit a time period where he was already present in said time period  ??

Just for laughs they should show one or two of the previous doctors or their companions walking around the ship, narrowly missing each other (except for the companions I guess its fine for them to bump into each other, or into different doctors)

Nah, the Doctor can meet previous incarnations and has done. In the original series we had "The Three Doctors", "The Five Doctors" and "The Two Doctors" where the incarnations worked alongside (no surprises as to how many incarantions appeared in each). They've got some special Time Lord immunity to the Blinovitch limitation effect.

I'd really dig that :) It's only not permissible for more regular folk to bump into their other incarnations. That would be a Very Bad Thing, according to "Mawdryn Undread" from the original show.l

I know about the seventh in "The Left-Handed Hummingbird" but when were the first and eighth on board? The ninth also made reference to it in "The End of the World" and said he ended up hanging off an iceberg, though he could have been joking or referring to one of his earlier incarnations.

Sorry, I meant ninth. Wasn't there a picture of him at the Titanic in "Rose"? The guy who was collecting information on him - didn't he get a picture?

I actually thought the first Doctor popped on to the Titanic during one of the many Dalek run-around episodes, but it appears I'm mistaken (flicked through the wonderful Discontinuity Guide - do you have it yourself? A must have, if not). Maybe I got muddled up with him being at the Empire State Building (also involving Daleks...).

Gavin W, I'll hand it to you as being someone whose Doctor Who knowledge is scarier than mine - well done :) Out of off-topic-esque interest, are you also the proud owner of the complete Virgin set of novels and most of the BBC ones?

I think he was on the docks, and had persuaded the family to not board.

Yes, he warned a family not to get on board. Then there was the subsequent vague reference in the next episode.

Indeed I do, great little reference book. I think you might be thinking of the Mary Celeste in The Chase. Weirdly, I've seen a few people on different forums making this mistake and recalling Hartnell's Doctor being on the Titanic.

I think "scarier" is just a polite way of saying "geekier"! :D Yes, I have the full set of both ranges but haven't read half of them, I'm trying to catch up on my Big Finish backlog at the moment. That's why I thought maybe McGann had been on the Titanic in one of the EDAs.

I reckon Kylie will do a good job. She could act when she was in Neighbours anyway. I guess it depends on the type of character they have planned for her. Definitely can't be worse than Tate (I shudder at the thought of season 4 and hope whoever takes over after RTD has the sense to get rid of her again and bring back Sally Sparrow).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,191 ✭✭✭Unpossible

    bring back Sally Sparrow
I was so dissapointed she wasn't brought along in the TARDIS, hopefully they will bring her (and her boyfriend) back. Is the torchwood series still running? they might pop up in that.

It is. Martha Jones will be making an appearance in it, which is why the Doctor needs a full time companion.

"Kylie who plays Astrid - a waitress on The Titanic"

    Astrid = anagram = Tardis ??

    Thoughts?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,461 ✭✭✭popebenny16

Ah well, she is the Tardis in human form, after all the Tardis is a "she".

Either that or is just there to wind us all up, which wouldnt surprise me.
