Post Processing Photo Challenge 1

As discussed in Photography, the following is the first of what will hopefully be an interesting series of challenges where a group of people will process the same photo.

The rules (as made up by me (!) and open to change after the first challenge is complete when we see what works best):

1). You can use whatever software you like
2). You can do whatever processing you like to the original photo
3). You can use whatever filters, actions, etc you like
4). You can encorporate other photos, typography, anything you like into the work submitted
5). You may not crop the image beyond 10% of the original
6). You must submit your entry by the deadline. This can be done by attaching your entry to this thread, or hosting it externally somwhere
7). Each entrant must vote for one entry, except for their own

You have until midnight on July 10th to submit your work for this first challenge - that's over a week from now.

*** UPDATE *** Although we are not using flickr exclusively for this, if you are a member of flickr and would like to add your entry to the group I've set up, here it is. Just a request an invite if you aren't already a member of the group - http://www.flickr.com/groups/443303@N22/

Here is the subject. Download the linked version directly below if you're going to work on it as this is the high res version. The inline version below the link is just for comparisons. It's a photo of the St Finbarr's chapel in Gouganne Barra, West Cork. Badly in need of some processing, so a great subject for this first challenge - as suggested by Julie.

Thanks to rymus for the hosting space and for everyone in advance for participating. Can't wait to see the different results.

A little bit more conservative but I have my excuses too: age. [Edit] I posted this at 18.49 yet it jumped up to the top. coolcon had posted 30 minutes before me. Boards is getting senile on us :(

Right, here's my entry.... Its not great and looks a bit cartoonish but Ive my excuses all lined up - I am only 16 and therefore probably less experienced than most other entrants, i dont have photoshop or any other pro software just photoimpression that came with a compact camera and to top it all off my computer is incredibley slow and stupid! :D Anywhooo here it is -

Oh, and err...can we set the crop rule up so we can crop as much as we want as long as the photo is still presentable without pixelation?

EDIT: I should probably have put my photo in here ^^

wow great entries so far guys ! keep em coming. I'm going to play around a bit more with mine before I submit.

Fajitas - let's reconsider the cropping thing after this first challenge is complete, along with any other suggestions that come up. I'm certain the 'rules' aren't perfect but we will find out by trying. With cropping I think it will be important to put some limits on it, so lets have a think about that ...

• Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 287 ✭✭latchiko

Bah! I should have read the rules properly before starting. On a quick re-read I noticed the cropping rule. That immediately disqualifies my image but seeing I've finished working on it I'm going to post it anyway.

Mark, could you stick the original in your opening post so that people can see everything without having to download and resize the original?

Quick job, closed the door out terrible draft and them swans are at it like rabbits.

(Probably would have cropped a bit more off the bottom as well, if I thought it was allowed under the rules)

Seeing as we're on an animal kick...
(Plus, inside the chapel I have restyled it to a 1/15th replica of the Sistine chapel)

ok before I overdo this and ruin it, here is my own entry. Done with Adobe Photoshop CS3 on Windows.

Setting out on this, my objective was to remove the pink from the clouds, highlight the clouds and make the sky more contrasty, as well as make the grass greener. Loads of layer masks and adjustment layers to change elements of the shot without adversely impacting on the rest. I'm happy with the result.

Agreed.
Very well executed IMHO.

(I won't bore anyone with my own lackluster results)

thanks donkey. to clarify - the objectives listed were just my ones, so I've clarified that in my edited post.

Sorry, hope I didn't misquote you there, I forgot you were the OP.

Anyway, I looked at the original image and had the same personal objectives :)
The magenta in those clouds looked quite wrong... and many parts of the image were blown-out.
I gave up on it, but looking at your version I think you nailed it nicely.

The only thing I think is still a bit off about the picture is that the magenta clouds still haunt the the waters surface a bit.

I notice there are some more mad entries here as well... I think you guys would have fun with us over in the Digital Art & Design board where there's no end to the photoshop madness.

Mine effort and apologies for the sight delay although the deadline is not for a while.

This was processed in three stages.

1) with Photoshop Elements 5.0 to do autocontrast, burn in the side of the chapel and do some curves adjustments.

2) over on ACDSee Pro 2 which is currently in beta I did some more colour adjustments and used their very nice channel mixer to do a black and white conversion

3) back to PSE 5.0 to apply a photofilter and then a frame.

I'm done with this.

I might have gone a bit overboard, but I wanted to give a good contrast for Kermit.

BREAKING NEWS
postprocess2.jpg

Allied fighters were scrambled after a routine reconnaissance flight by US warplanes following reports of sightings of King Kong and Godzilla stumbled on Osama's hideout, fiendishly disguised like a Irish chapel, reports say that Godzilla and King Kong are nowhere to be seen and the chapel door is closed and locked. :)

oh! i know i'm too late for this and i shouldn't come on here under the infulence!! :o
but anyway - just putting em up for the craic, some very good interpretations and skills displayed, well done everyone
