    Booya!
    I've always said this

    How's Crackdown even no. 100?

I hate readers lists because there are always games in there that will always be games in there that don't deserve to be there but are because they are popular or are quite new. 2 that don't deserve to be there are Half-Life 2 (brilliant but HL 1 is so much better) and Halo (it's alright but too ordinary too be even considered a classic).

Personally speaking OoT isn't the best game ever for me. I'd rank Panzer Dragoon Saga or Suikoden 2 as my favourite games but these would never top a public poll or even get in one since very few people have played them (a heinous crime that isn't actually anyones fault :( ). I'd even rank Super Metroid and LttP above it. However it is well deserving of the top spot because there is no denying that it is a truly brilliant and visionary game that despite being lumbered with a now antiquated engine and graphics still manages to be a wonderful experience if you can see through them. Not no. 1 for me but definitely top 10.

Nice to see Resi 4 in the top 10. Despite being relatively new I doubt we will see it out of the top 10 of these lists for quite a while. For me it was the best gaming experience I've had since Metroid Prime.

Resident Evil 4 is good but I don't know if it should of come no.2, OoT deserved to come no.1. I don't think there will ever be a Zelda game as good as it again.

FF VII is better than XII

Nice to see resi 4 there but where o where is Metroid prime. My favourite gaming experience of the last gen and much more enjoyable that HL2 and especially HALO (can never forgive it after the library level).

Can not believe Legend of Zelda: Ocarina is 10 years old that makes me feel so old ha :D

Hold on! Why in the name of snot is FFXII on that list. There are far, far better games than that in fact I'd go so far as to say it's pretty crap.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,181 ✭✭✭✭Jim

As you said Retro it all comes down to popularity against quality. For me Zelda is probably my favourite game of all time, but theres a hell of alot of games I've never played. An example would be two mates of mine, one of them says MGS is the best game of all time while the other says FFVII is, the arguments go on all the time despite the fact that they've never even played the other persons game.

Btw, wtf is Halo up there. I remember getting an original XBox with Halo (having not heard much about it before), played through it and thought "That was ok, not great, but enjoyable" then looking it up on the net seeing people saying it was revolutionary and the best game of all time etc... Never understood it. Goldeneye > Halo for console fps tbh.

Good God! Me too! :( I remember being in school at the time and having the release date counted down in my homework journal... LttP got me hooked though, for its time it was phenomenal!

Why, one would suspect you didnt like that game ;)
But same old same old top ten list. Meh. Usual classics, few surprises, except perhaps FFXII (although I doubt it would be there in 6 months time). I always am angered when Halo gets into these lists, but hey, it is based on popularity.

    I prefer LttP to Ocarina.

Ocarina is very good, but I think its overrated.
I've finished Ocarina twice, but LttP at least 5 times since it came out.

I agree, I got Ocarina the day it was released and enjoyed playing it when it was released but have only ever played through it once back in 1998.

I have played LTTP numerous times since I first got it in 92 and this xmas I loaded it up onto my DS for old times sake. It is still fantastic.

Ocarina deserves it. Lack of multiplayer games like Counter-strike and Warcraft 3 needs to be noted. Say what you will but Counter-strike was the most popular online game and still gets top prizes in most tournaments for years.

Definitely not a great list. R-type Final is listed despite being a travesty of a game and the only bad game in the series yet R-type 1, a true undisputed classic does't make it?

I'd say the SF2 votes got shoved together with the SF anniversary votes, probably happened with R-type and R-type final as well which is the only way to explain the formers absence and the latters inclusion.

I'm actually suprised that there are quite a few good games mentioned. A lot of crap (MGS2..) but some great ones. Paper Mario and the like.

I don't believe Zelda should be No.1. I have played it all the way through and i did like it, but there are better action rpgs out there than it.

Psychonauts/Lemmings/Chronotrigger/Bomberman/Shadow of the Colossus/Final Fantasy 7/Goldeneye 007 should all have been much higher on that list. (all of them very near the top)

Final Fantasy 12/Metal Gear Solid 2/Manhunt should not be anywhere on that list (I like Final Fantays 12, but its definitely not better than FF7 or Goldeneye or the like)(MGS 1 and 3 are good, but 2 was too preachy)(Manhunt was a game whose only selling point was the level of violence in it, which didn't actually do anything to improve its gameplay)

Where is Silent Hill 1? much better game than SH2. and a great game overall
Where is Red Faction? one of the best fps of all time
Where is Kingdom Hearts? its a better action rpg than Zelda (thats Kingdom Hearts 1 mind, while KH2 had a very good story, its gameplay let it down)

Silent Hill 2 is infinitely better than 1
Red Faction is a load of ballox
Kingdom Hearts while great was nowhere near the standard of a yelda game. It was linear and felt lmore like a Devil May Cry clone than an out and out action adventure like zelda (which isn't and RPG and neither is KH).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,698 ✭✭✭✭BlitzKrieg

heh...i lost interest in both kingdom hearts before the end.

KH 1 kept me interested until the final castle, then got bored and moved on.

KH 2 had me for the first part simply cause i found the story very interesting but when it went back to its traditional set up (and that horrendously boring mulan bit) i stopped playing.

They're both games in which you have direct control over character weapon, armour and skill development, and they both involve sidequests the completing of which is not necessary to the completing of the game. That sounds like an RPG to me. Ok, they're not excactly the same as an old Final Fantays turned based RPG, or a World of Warcraft online RPG, but they're still RPGS.
Also, Zelda was pretty linear too. There where limits in which stones you could go to at first, and you need them all before you get the Master sword.
And I don't know where you're getting Devil May Cry from.....

Thats pretty tenuous at best. Zelda is no more an RPG than ,say, GTA.
You have next to no control over how link powers up over the course of the game. Your advancments in armour, weapons and skills is carefully drip-fed to you. Which is all part of the zelda charm.
A proper RPG would let you choose how to level up, like say Final Fantasy, Grandia or Fallout.
Also, Zelda was pretty linear too. There where limits in which stones you could go to at first, and you need them all before you get the Master sword.

I think you'll find 99.99% of games are pretty linear and with good reason. Especially with zelda where there is a story and at the start the game is trying to teach you how to play it.

Though if i remember correctly, in Ocarina of time, after the first 3 stones you can tackle the temples in nearly any order you wish, but the game would hint at the best order to do them in, as they increased in difficulty. Though i'm open to being corrected on that.

Not that i see much of a problem with that, to be honest. What you call linear, i'd call focused. For a game like zelda having the main focus clear to you is nothing but a good thing. Sure there were side quests (the swap quest for the giant sword, for example), but the main thrust of the game was always clear to you.
To be honest, i can't imagine a more frustrating point in any game than the oft encounted "what the **** do i do now?"

I have no problem with linear games either (my post was just an answers to RetrOgamers). I didn't like Morrowind because it didn't seem to have any point.(yes, I could go and join such-and-such a guild, or go and beat up a dungeon of thieves or something, but there was no big storyline to drive you to bother to do that, so I didn't)

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 52,408 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

And I don't know where you're getting Devil May Cry from.....

Because they are both bastard action games that focus on excellent combat mechanics. You say there is limited levelling up in KH but there is also levelling up in DMC, you get new abilities and can increase health and it's just as advanced as in KH. There's also submissions in DMC if you look for them. I'd class them both as action games and definitely not RPGs. KH is also extremely linear. Zelda is far more deserving of the adventure game title.

As for red faction, rubbish AI samey levels, samey bad guys, need I go on.
