Diddy. Kong. Racing. Class multiplayer. It'd be pretty boring single player tho so if ye don't have any buddies don't bother with it.

N64 emulation on the Pc is really poor i find, got myself an N64 because of how unsatisfied I was.

Many people are going to recommend Goldeneye but I say stay well away. While a truly groundbreaking and amazing game at the time it really has aged astonishingly badly.

Mario 64 is a must, still as good today as ever. There are other great platformers such as the Banjo games.

Blast Corp is a great game, really good arcady fun.

Sin and Punishment is an absolute blast, japanese only but by far one of the best N64 games ever made. Lylat Wars is easier to find but sin and Punishment is better in every way.

Check out Space Station Silicon Valley by the GTA creators for something really original and brilliant. you might want to try Body Harvest, the precursor to the modern GTAs.

For racing games your best to go for F-zero X and Waverace 64 (avoid the awful PAL version). Excitebike 64 is also a great laugh. Beetle Adventure Racing is an oft overlooked gem.

Of course there is Zelda. Ocarina of Time is just an amazing game despite the now dated looks. Majora's Mask equally so especially how it tried something new with the series. If you want a crazy zelda clone go for Mystical Ninja starring Geomon.

How could I forget the stupendous Jet Force Gemini!

    Goldeneye
    Zelda Ocarina of Time
    Perfect Dark
    F-Zero X
    LYLAT WARS!

And of course Super Smash Bros.

perfect dark (much better than perfect dark zero on the 360)
    wwf no mercy
    conkers bad fur day
    mario kart
    banjo kazooie
    star wars rogue squadron
    turok 2

id love if they released perfect dark on vc !

Goldeneye, definitly. it is probably the best non-online multiplayer I have ever played, and that doesn't just include shoot-em-ups. it also has a long playability

    also
    the two zelda games

Interesting thread considering I'v been addicted to N64 this past week! Downloaded a torrent with a class emulator (1964) and about 130 games.. It's unreal.. And I googled this topic just the other day..

Here's the games I'v been playing ALOT of anyway..
    Mario Tennis
    Tetrisphere
    International Superstar Soccer
    Nuclear Strike

And then here's the 'best of all time' types
    Super Mario 64
    Zelda: Orcarina Of Time
Perfect Dark (dosen't work without an n64 controller though)
    Mario Kart

That should cover you! Happy gaming! N64 = best console of all time for my money

Damn straight, get Goldeneye! Best multiplayer memories ever, great single player as well!

Banjo Kazooie, Diddy Kong Racing, Donkey Kong, Mario 64, the Zelda's.

Fcuk, I never realised how great the games were till now! We need Banjo for the Wii.

A new Banjo is coming to the 360.

You should all play goldeneye now without your rose tinted glasses, it really isn't the game it used to be.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,179 ✭✭✭FunkZ

That sounds great man, I happen to for some reason have a 360 that no one in my family plays.

I'm sure Goldeneye seems slow, and boring nowadays but back then it was the best IMO!

Nobody said Donkey Kong 64 yet. That was an alright game. The N64 is the best console ever. None of these current gen consoles or last gen consoles are better than it. It is probably the most under-rated and best console. Also Pilotwings is another good game. And Rush 2049.

    Goldeneye
    Mario Kart 64
    Super Smash Bros
    Mario 64
ISS (International Superstar Soccer, the grandad of Pro Evo) 64
    Diddy Kong Racing
    Lylat Wars
    Wrestlemania 2000
    Pokemon Snap
    Pokemon Stadium
    Zelda: Ocarina of Time

    I could go on.

Are they making this for the Wii? I think I heard Nintendo were. But Wing Island is supposed to be a bit like it so I may buy that.

I hope to god they are making a Wii version. However it kind of depends on the original developer making a game. IIRC the pilotwings games were made by a company that usually specialises in military and commercial flight training simulations, so hopefully they can get them on board again.

Pilotwings and Pilotwings 64 are down for VC release :)

Wing Island is meant to be cack.

Perfecrt Dark, Mario 64, Smash Bros, Mario Kart 64, and Donkey Kong 64. pretty much all i did between 97 and 2001!
    what an amazing console.

    I said DK!

Pilotwings would be good! I remember spending hours when I first got the 64 playing that.

What about WaveRace, legend of a game I think!

Have you tried all the emulators?
    http://www.emulator-zone.com/doc.php/n64/

Ive never seen as many emulators for a console.
Some of them take a good bit of tweaking before you get satisfying results.
Project 64 is meant to be the best provided you have the specs for it.

Goldeneye has certainly aged horrifically, but it's still got a lot of craic potential if you give it a chance and can get over the clunkiness of it (try using the 'domino' control system with two controllers - hard to get used to, but it's better when you do).

Just downloaded Mario Kart 64 & Goldeneye.
Man is mario kart addictive! :D

Never realised the Cartridges were limited to only 64mbs.

I guess the N64 made up in gameplay and fun factor more than anything.

All the usual suspects I suppose. I was really fond of the Banjo games they were class. One that most people probably wont say that I got immense fun out of was Waverace. I loved the way you only needed one hand to play the game perfectly. Not that I only have one hand but its nice to have your other hand free for eating sangwiches etc.

    My pics are:

    Mario 64
    Perfect Dark
    Goldeneye
    Turok 2
    Turok Rage Wars
Worms Armageddon (although you can more easily get it on PC)
    Lylat Wars
    Rogue Squadron
    F-Zero X

Well, thats all the games I kept anyway.

Yeah, Goldeneye was astonishing for the time with the attention to detail it had, only to be bettered by Perfect Dark... There's still an awful lot in that game that I miss in the likes of Red Steel or any of the Bond games since, such as the detail in the responses of the bad guys to being shot - limping away, dropping their heavy machine guns only to pull out a pistol with their good hand, good line-of-sight approximation and so on. God I was bitterly disappointed when I played Perfect Dark Zero on the 360. I mean, yeah it's pretty and smooth, but the detail and depth's just not there... There was something special about the Rare and Nintendo combination, look at Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, DK64, Diddy Kong Racing, Conker's Bad Fur Day and so on... All fantastic and making the most of the console's abilities.

I don't know how likely these are to appear on the VC though - Microsoft now owning Rareware and all...

Other favourites of mine: F-Zero X, Wipeout 64 (even though it's buggy and limited, I'm a serious Wipeout fan), Mario Kart 64, Lylat Wars, the two Zeldas are wonderful (and had heavier carts due to the extra memory in them) Can't remember, but there were many others that kept me busy for years!

No, the Wii Virtual Console - sorry :) Is the copyright not still owned by Rare, and hence Microsoft? I'm sure some enterprising young nerd has already taken the ROMs out of those carts and produced images of them for emulation on the PC...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 444 ✭✭fortuneg

First go get yourself all the Rare games, they should keep you entertained for the next year or so!

Anything else is just superfluous, excpt the two Zeldas... and Marios... and super smash brothers...
Ok so these more to the N64 than Rare...

    But not much

I have to recommend Shadowman. Its like a cross between Zelda and Mario but much darker in tone. Getting all 120 dark souls was immensly do-able and satisfiying

Seconded, one of the best games I've ever played...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,485 ✭✭✭✭Banjo

    Same as everyone else...
Both Zeldas, Goldeneye, Banjo, DK64, DiddyKong, Blast Corps, Perfect Dark Rogue Squadron, F-Zero,
Jet Force Gemini was awesome although the multiplayer sucked.
Killer Instinct Gold is a great fighting game. A little too combo-based but it's worth it when you get an uuuuuuuUUUUUULLLLLTRAAAAACCCCCCOOOOOMMMMBBOOOOOOOOOOOOOOooooooooo
    Excuse me.
ShadowMan drove me up the wall because the murky graphics meant that for about 3 solid months I walked straight past a path up a cliff face and couldn't figure out where I was supposed to go. It's not a great game but it's not bad at all.
Mariokart 64 is probably the worst of the series. It's not that it's bad, it's just not good enough.

    Zelda:Ocarina of Time
    Goldeneye
    Mario 64
    Mario Kart
    Diddy Kong Racing
    Banjo Kazooie

All of the above mentioned games are amazing but the real gem is Pokemon Snap. An absolutely charming game that had real charm. Killer Instinct gold is class and an honourable mention to the ISS commentary.

    HYPER ARIAL DOMINATION!!!

Pro evo doesn't have it's charm
