I have used paypal sucessfully for several years until now. My credit card expired recently and a few days ago I attempted to change the expiry date on paypal.I did this but then got a message saying that the address on my card could not be verified by paypal. I have not changed address and have rang my credit card provider to make sure their address for me had not altered.I then rang paypal and explained and was told it might be a problem with their system and to remove my credit card from the site and add it again and this should solve the problem. I did this and got a message saying my card had been disabled by paypal. I rang them and was told because I removed my card (as I'd been told to do!) I could never again use my credit card with paypal. They said this was because I had either (a) removed the card and readded it before or (b) because Id used it with another paypal account. Neither of these situations apply to me.I have never had any issue with paypal or my credit card company. I was told I could place a writen complaint to paypal head quarters but that it would be ignored.
Has this happened to anyone else and have they managed to successfully resolve it ? It seems so unfair!
Is there any alternative to paypal thats worth persuing ?

Contact your bank and ask for a new CC number.

That seems a bit ridiculous tbh. I'm surprised that they have no way of changing the expiry date on a CC, as they do tend to expire...

There should be an option to update the expiry date.

Hate to repeat myself but incase I wasn't clear ..
There is a facilty for updating your card. I tried to use that and it said my address was incompatible with my card (which it wasn't.I rand Visa and paypal to be sure) .The support guy told me to delete my card and re-ad it so I did. Then I got a message saying paypal had disabled my card entirely and I could never use it with them again. This was confirmed by another paypal phone person.
I suppose I posted hoping someone would say it happened to them and that there actually was some resolution in the end. Any takers ?
    I need paypal :o

There is, but it often doesn't work, at least it doesn't for me anyway.

I had the same problem as you chilly and now my card won't work with Paypal anymore either. I tried about a dozen times to verify the new card with my address and Paypal kept denying it. I rang the bank about it and they said that they had verified the attempts by Paypal, 10 times, and then started blocking them as trying so many times is a bit suspicious. Paypal claim that the bank block all their attempts.

The problem with Paypal is that they insist on having a postcode entered, when we don't have postcodes.

Paypal also told me that it's Visa that are blocking my card from being used again. I don't see how this can be the case, I just think Paypal are a shower of lying bastids and wouldn't use them if I didn't have too. Fortunately I have a 2nd credit card and just use that on Paypal now, though when it expires I presume I'll have the same fun again updating the date.

I don't have the same problem but my address appears as unverified although it is the same as on the cc - I moved house OH no!!. Numerous emails & long calls to PP support have not resolved the problem although I even received a snail mail letter to verify the address. Their system seems to be unable to cope with those things and their support guys & gals don't seem to understand what I am talking about and don't seem to take notes either - each call I have to start from scratch ... one year down and counting. So I wouldn't hold my breath that Paypal is either willing or able or interested in your puny little problems. So far their co-called customer support must be one of the most unhelpful and inflexible ones I have encountered

Thanks for the replies. It's good to know I'm not alone in having this happen. I rang again today and no joy. I see what you are saying about them not keeping much of a log on calls Morgana.I asked for the name of the man who advised me to delete my card in the first place and was told that it would take weeks if not months for them to find that out. Their service is desperate!
Looks like there's no option but to accept the lunacy unless anyone else is going to chime in with a solution.

Simplest it seems is cancel CC and ask for a new one. You'll get a new number in about 5 working days at most and then you can use that on Paypal.

Just delete the old card and add the new one in paypal, the system recognises the number and none of the verificatin crap is needed again.

It seems I have to take back my "paypal are crap" rant above. Annoyance bubbled to the fore again Friday and I rang and this time spoke to a very helpful man who told me to fax or upload a copy of my CC statement to paypal and that they'd resolve the issue within 24 hours and enable my card for usage again. He was pleasant and polite and much nicer than the "No.Go away" brigade I dealt with initially. So to Jor el and Morgana it might be worth a try ringing back and suggesting yourself that you fax through/upload your statement for them as proof of address.

Ah crap... i came on here to post a thread about having this very same problem, checked to see if a similar thread existed 1st, then came across this! Looks like i'm going to have to ring PayPal then :( This is a joke, credit cards expire all the time, how an earth does their system not cope with this.

When i try to update my expiry date and save the change it just says it can't confirm the billing address but it's the exact same address as before, i even ticked the box that says 'use existing billing address'. I think i had this before the last time my credit card expired and it turned out to be Norton so when i disabled it it worked, but thats not the case this time. I recently won some items on eBay and now i can't pay for them until i get this resolved

    * UPDATE *
I just logged into eBay and went to 'PayPal' under 'My Summary', then picked the option to update financial info which opened PayPal, i logged into PayPal, hit 'remove card', confirmed that which then automatically brought me to the add-new-card screen so i re-added it with my new expiry date, all worked fine :)

Is paypal in general gone a bit iffey lately. Beside a few cc issues, my account is locked atm after I tried to buy something. It was in an ebay shop and when I went through the payment and tried to pay with paypal it started doing somethign I can only describe as like when you buy soething on a normal online shop and a little rotatign egtimer (not th ewindows one) started. I think its something along the lines of the shop having its own payment system but paypal interpreted it as a 3rd party trying to hack my account and locked it. strange goings on. Now i have to fax them a utility bill.

    Appologies for th ehijack.:)

hardly. I tend to circumvent instead of fixing. I have 2 cards on my bank account, so 2 paypal accounts. :D

You'll only be able to do that once though. When your card expire next, if you remove it you wont be able to re-add it. That's what happened me, I removed it the first time as they wouldn't update the expiry date. The 2nd time it happened I couldn't re-add it as Paypal said Visa was now stopping it from ever being used with them again.

Don't know if contacting them again will work for me like it did for Chilly as that's as far as I got with them the last time. They told me there was nothing I could do other than get a new credit card number.

The next time my card expires ill contact PayPal customer support straight away and ask them how to go about updating my expiry date. Thats a whole year away so i won't worry about that now :)

I wouldn't be so confident of that route Shigsy. That's what I did and when I removed my card on their advice I was told theyd then disabled my card because I had removed it !

Joe el : I think I probably was just lucky in getting a nice and pleasant support person who made the effort. I think it's worth ringing again and suggesting yourself that you fax through/upload your statement to them as proof of address in case whoever you speak to is too dense/lazy to think of it themselves. The guy I spoke to even wrote and emailed me instructions on how to upload a copy of my statement to their site. I can forward it to you if you want.

same happened to me this week...CC expired...had to remove...when try to add with same number, address, new expiry date I get helpful message that PayPal have disbaled this card....

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 11,909 ✭✭✭✭Wertz

Hmm, just happened across this thread after updating my two CCs with paypal...I simply changed the expiry dates to the new ones, entered my CC verification no and changed nothing else on the page, hit save and 5 seconds later, all was well again. Pretty painless. I don't know why you'd remove the CC from their system (unless some CSR gimp told you to, obviously)
The postcode thing is probably important....I made sure that my billing address with the bank and with paypal have an "n/a" where the code should go, don't know if that helps...

If the system refuses to accept your new expiry date then you have no choice but to remove and try to re-add it. Paypal's customer care is absolutely useless, they've lied to me at every given opportunity and they don't seem to care that postcodes give these problems.

As always, you'll only find out how useless a company is when something goes wrong.

Yeah I know, paypal are dicks, even when things aren't going too badly.
Their system is obviously flawed if it can't accept a simple update of two form fields. I'm certainly not criticising people for doing what a CSR told them to...

Remember that Paypal is not an actual bank, and is not subject to any nation's banking laws... so they can freeze/close/alter your account at any time for any reason, for any amount of time.
