Is there any grounds by which one can escape paying a parking ticket fine, for either

    a) being parked on double yellows
    or
    b) parking past the 'free' time allowed in a pay & display area...

    ? Any help appreciated.

The only defences I can think of are:
    Loading/unloading
    Improperly issued ticket.
Bye laws invalid/ incorrect signage or road markings.

now that you mention loading/unloading... I was actually working when I parked there, if you count fast food deliveries as working....

Some councils operate an administrative appeals system for parking tickets / clamping.

    Were you loading, etc.?

Generally no. Grace is given on a hierarchial basis - essentially some offences are prioritised over others. You will get no grace for nuisance parking (loading bay, wheelchair space, etc.). You will likely get a few minutes grace if you meter ran out, but this is grace, not a right - and if you got a ticket, you were over time.

But seriously, its a parking ticket, not 5-10 years in Mountjoy. But if you want to blow your "ritual satanic abuse when I was a child" defence, go ahead.
