Getting engagement ring made?

    Hi all,

I've gotten engaged in the last couple of weeks and I'm finding the engagment ring shopping a bit overwhelming (very ungirly of me!) One of the options that we have is to have a diamond from a pair of old earings made into a new ring for me. Has anyone on the site done this before? can anyone recommend a jewller to do this? Are there any dangers/pitfalls that I should be aware of. I think I might like a couple of gemstones (rubys or sapphires) set in the ring aswell. Would most Jewllers be able to source these for me.

Thanks for any thoughts you have,

    Gnashers

    Congratulations on the engagement.

If you're getting a ring made, then make sure that the stylr you pick is one you've tried on your hand; with a custom ring, you pay a lot to get the piece made, and while on paper it may be perfect, on the hand it mightn't be.

Most jewellers will have someone capable of hand making a ring, and should be able to provide loose gemstones. Most will recommend sticking with diamond or sapphire for engagaement, as these stones are harder than the likes of emeralds (I'll generally recommend that people don't get an emerald in their engagament ring based on the fact that they're a soft stone). Shop around for a price. Also say where your based; someone may be able to recommend a jeweller in your area.

WRT the old diamonds, I'd advise going for a classic style setting, as it should lend itself well to the cut. However, if the diamonds you have are small, beware of having too much claw in the setting covering over the diamonds. Finding a third old diamond to match with them for a classic 3 stone may take some time, so be patient. It is possible to get them, but is a bit specialised so not all modern jewellers will be willing to take the job on.

    Best of luck.

Whatever you decide if your going to the trouble of having a ring made, get the wedding band done at the same time, esp if its an interesting design. Worked in a jewelers and had no end of ppl coming in with self designed rings and then being unable to match a band to it.

My wife had an idea what she wanted from a magazine and we took the picture into Patrick Glynn on abbey street. He is next door to Abbey news up a flight of stairs. He asked us what we wanted to spend. He told us the cost was the diamond so if you have that already you are laughing. My wife was thrilled with the finished item. Check him out.

Bellerays' advice about the wedding ring is spot on; getting them done together will make your life a lot easier in the long run.

I highly recommend Michael Perry in the Powerscourt Centre. My wife got her wedding ring made by him to match her engagement ring and he done a fantastic job. He's a nice guy, knows his stuff and will work really well to do what you want done.

Thanks for all the advice guys, I live in Dublin so I'll definitely check out Michael Perry and Patrick Glynn. It makes sense to get the wedding band made at the same time too, so I'll look into that and do a good bit of research before I settle on a design.

    Thanks again,

TBH it's not necessary to get the wedding band made at the same time. We got her engagement ring made around the diamond from her mother's engagement ring 18 months ago. All I had to do was take the engagement ring back in and it was sent away and a mould was made to then create the wedding band.

Got this done through Whitmore's in Gorey. Whole process from start to finish was great.

I nearly thought that was an earlier post from me - I couldn't agree more! We picked up our wedding rings yesterday - herself's was made from scratch to match her engagement ring, and she is absolutely delighted with it.

I don't know if this is common practice, but he re-plated the engagement ring (which was bought elsewhere), to make sure it matched the finish of the wedding ring.

We were very impressed, as he is off on holidays shortly, so he only had 4 weeks notice to make the ring, and he had them done within that time.

    Hi All,

Thanks for all your suggestions. Just to let you know that we got my ring last Friday and I'm delighted with it. We ended up getting it designed and made by Sé at Da Capo (http://www.dacapo.ie/ ). I'm really pleased with the design, the quality of the work and the service so I'd recommend them. We didn't get the wedding rings made at the same time but we plan to head back to SE when the time comes,

    Hi

I just read this post and I feel a little mislead by what you say, to me this appears to be a blatant attempt of self-promotion. (dacapo) My alarm bells ring when I see you need to post your web site address twice?
My view of such blogger’s would be to keep well clear and go with a shop who is sincere and less obvious. I want an honest review not a self-promoted view of the owners shop, please don't post your website here in such a fashion.
I am looking for a jeweller in Dublin for my wedding ring and had the same idea of re using an old family ring from my mother’s side. Can anyone help or recommend a shop in Dublin as I work in the city centre.

    Thank you..
    Sally

    Hi Sally,

I would have to recommend Patrick Glynn. Vincent O' Neill on South Anne Street offers a similar service to Glynn's and my sister in law got her wedding ring there. She was delighted with the service he gave her. Apparently she wasn't altogether happy with the finished product initially and he had no problem changing it for her. I found with Glynn's they had more samples available to try on. As a previous poster mentioned, it's a good idea to try on a similar style to what you're looking for just to make sure it suits you.
As regards self promotion of companies, I may be naive but it looks as though two different posters linked dacapo's website..I may be missing something though!
Good luck with your ring search :)

O'Connors in harolds cross apparently design rings from scratch, I didn’t get mine there but have heard very good things about them.

We got my fiancé's ring from diamant, very happy with it.

My fiancé found the ring she wanted in fields, it was priced at 6k which was well over my budget.
I took the details of the diamonds etc and downlaoded a pic off the field website, emailed diamant for a quote.

We're very happy with the ring at almost 50% of the price
