There is something that i have never got since i was a kid.

Now i know you might not understand this but still.

I think that the empire are the good guys. and the rebel alliance are well torrorists :)

What i really mean to to say look at the facts.

if we are only going with cannon info then we know from eps 1-3 that the galaxy with the republic was not that great a place to live with slavery ect on several worlds right?

So what was up with the empire? they took over the Repiblic senate and began a re-orginisation or power placing regional goveners on several key worlds and establishing the imperial senate which is evuentally wiped away and full controll was given to the regional goverments?

Oh BTW does the holiday special count as cannon?

Anyway what im saying is what did the empire realy do wrong?
every world they went to they wanted to controll and impose there own laws? once would assume certain freedoms are curtailed but also things like crime (rape assault slarvery weapons trading ect) stops because of fear.

My point is this if the rebel alliance had never foremed with aims to fight the empire then there would have been no problems and the galaxy would have been at peace.

Dont bother bringing up the death star, its like a nuke your not suppoosed to use it, also the only reason it was ussed was because of the existance of the rebal alliance.

Yeah, I actually wanted the empire to win when I was a kid.

As to what they did wrong, River from Serenity popped into my head "we're in their homes and in their heads and we haven't the right" ( I also think the alliance were the good guys!)

Freedom of choice is a common theme in sci fi films so its probably along those lines that we munch our popcorn thinking get'em luke!

That or because the script said so ;)

the Death Star was created as soon as the empire was formed, it wasn't made because a band of rebels started guerilla warfare.

However in a way I agree, and it made me think of our situation: would a dictatorship be such a bad thing? I mean in our democracy we get a vote, we get to kinda choose who we want in charge, but all politicians are full of shít anyway. So would having one man, a wise man as such, decide what our country will do be a bad thing?

can i be that wise man? :)

My pont about the death star was that when nukes where first built they where only considerded a deturrant against war but they where used.

Remember in episode 4 i think it was when one of the admirals said once this battlestation is fully operational then noone would dare oppose us..

As for river in serenity thats a very good point.

I would consider the alliance good guys because what they did made sence in a way, a war against the savage outer planets where there is no law but from what i saw in firefly and serenity the allaince won the war but never actually made those outer planets law abiding, slavery and crime and people like Adalie Niska? if the allaince had of actually made the galaxy a entirley peacefull law abaiding place then they would have been right.

But if they had of done that we wouldnt have seen firelfy or serenity :)

I call junior vice-president in our new dictatorship!

I do think theres a solid argument for the empire not being evil...except for that fact that it was led by a dark lord of the sith(but then a certain point of view always comes into it!)

Using the Death Star on Alderan could be likened to the bomb on Hiroshima to save american lives.

The alliance really did drop the ball on the old border planets the more I think of it!

well the story was told from the perspective of the alliance / jedi, so of course they're going to label him the 'dark lord', as it is indeed, as you already said, based "on our own point of view" to quote Obi-Wan.

I realise this is off topic, but in Con Air I always want the cons to win and hate the character of Nick Cage for foiling their beautiful plans

Well when nukes were first built they were meant for war! It's only when someone else built nukes they became a deterrent

But I think we're supposed to have the impression the Death Star was built for attack...

Really all they needed was better P.R. - Instead of calling it the "Death Star" they should have called it the "Protection Star" or something... And they shouldn't call it "The Dark Side" - I mean "Dark" implies unknown and evil and the wrong way (the ones who use it aren't enlightened), so since they think this is the right way to be they shouldn't call it "The Dark Side" themselves...

And The Empire? The Federation might have been a better word...

Ive Always liked Confederacy, (The Breen Confederacy) has a nice ring to it, anyway speaking of things always being told from the view of the jedi/rebal alliance you should try to watch star wars special of robot chicken which does a 10 min scene of what happens after episode 4 when vader rings the emperor to tell him what happened.

    I saw it, it's hilarious

"unless you stop acting like a wimpy bitch I'll tell everyone how much of a cry baby over pappion or Panda Bear or whatever her name was... *to the others* oh, he's crying"

I guess like everything in the SW story it "all depends on your point of view". Are terrorists in our world always neceessarily in the wrong or necessarily the 'bad guys' either? You could argue this country we live in was formed by terrorists standing up to an Empire. I think one of Lucas's major successes with the movies is produce what are essentially kids movies but to have real deeper levels (rather than Star Trek esque pseudo depth) to them that can be worth investigating (or just as easily be left alone without diminishing the enjoyment of the movies).

Holiday Special : considering Lucas has tried his best to wipe the Holiday Special off the face of the earth since its inception I think it's probably safe not to consider it as cannon. I've not actually seen the HS yet but I've heard it'd just awful. I have it on my portable media player for about 2 months now and I STILL can't bring myself to watch it :)

It's quite simple really, Darth Vader wears black so he must be a bad guy. And the stormtroopers wear white so.........oh........

The books set after ROTJ, hinted at the Empire being Racist, basically despising aliens and all the regional Govenors were human. There was SFA Aliens in the empire in the original trilogy.

As for the Death Star, the Death Star discusion scene in clerks is one of the greatest scenes in movie history.
