could be the induction kit, but check the fan belt and fan belt tensioner...

Might be worth sticking the original airbox back on to see if it makes a difference, but from the sounds of it something's damaged inside and will need a repair. Like Steve says, check all the belts on the engine are tight, have a good look around the engine when it's running to see if you can locate the source of the sound - that'll give you a better idea of what's going on. If it's having an adverse effect on the running I'd say it could be something like a bad valve or tappet, or a knackered bearing somewhere...

Does it have chain driven or belt driven camshafts?
A rattling/tapping sound on start up could be either the timing chain if it has one, or more likely rattling valve gear (cam followers/springs etc.),
Either of these would require replacement of the offending parts

It'll be the tappets. More info here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tappet

You could try changing the oil, it may reduce wear and noise. Not the end of the world anyway.

Does it sound like a 'little mouseen' in the in the engine?

Just a thought: Is there enough/any oil in the engine? Maybe the camshaft, followers etc. are running dry...

    Or eject the warp core?

    Or eject the warp core?

I'd only eject the warp core as a last resort. I'd be more inclined to first of all check to ensure that the warp core containment field is not destabilising.

But seriously, the first thing to do is to ensure that the oil level is correct. After that there are numerous components that can cause a knocking/tapping sound. You'd really want to have it looked at before it gets worse resulting in heftier repair bills.

Don't overfill the engine with oil, thats just as bad as no oil.

A knocking sound when cold that gets better as the engine warms up could be a piston knock. the piston expands as the engine warms up and the noise is not so bad , If it is the piston it will cost you.

Do the 307's use a spring loaded crank pulley same as the 206 ? it's notorious for failing and can produce a clicky noise too.
