How to say "NO" to the job

I was offered a job on friday in the IFSC, but after thinking about it, I dont really think it suits me at all, I would be in charge of 2 other people and the finance department is very small, they asked me why I wanted to leave so I told them the truth, to which the CFO made a funny face, but still offered me the job, I have emailed the agency and I told them that after considering the job and thinking about it over the weekend I have realized its not the right job for me, she will probably call me and give out and I am not in a mood to listen to her giving out, I never wanted in the first place to go for the interview but the girl from the agency was so nice and she has been trying really hard, but I just didnt feel like I was rite for the position, and I know I didnt give 100% in the interview, and still got offered the job, which is really weird, I think they are short for staff and wanted someone to start ASAP.

There's nothing wrong in not taking an unsuitable job. Some of those agents would pack you off to work in burger king if they could and there was a tenner commission in it for them.

If they start trying to persuade you - and they probably will - don't entertain them at all. Give an inch and they'll take a mile. Tell them you're not accepting it because it's not the right job for you. If they continue on just say something like "Look, I don't appreciate the pressure. I've told you it's not the right job for me and I'm not going to repeat myself again". Anymore cajoling out of them and just hang up.

Remember, they're getting thousands in commish from you. They work for you not the other way around so don't let them bully you.

Thank them for their interest and tell them you'll keep their position on file.

Well thanks for the advice, I have emailed her and she said its ok, not a prob, though after about 2 hours she called and tried to make me rethink, I really think she is nice, she didnt try to hard, I told her why i will not accept it and she understood, but she did try for about 10 mins to change my mind, I asked her to keep looking but I will be a bit choosy as I want the right job, I have learned from past mistakes, where I moved as I was offered more money and left after 6 months as it was so bad!!!

So hope all will be ok and I will not regret staying here.

    Thanks a mill

As long as you are courteous with a good reason as to why I am sure the employer will agree with you. it is of course nice if they try to convince you, but in the long run it won't do much good to have unmotivated staff working for them. Glad thigns worked out for you!

Oh yeah I have explained why I dont think I am suitable for the position, and that I would prefer to work for a big company with more staff and I do not mind the responsability but I just didnt feel I cliked with the job and the ppl who interviewd me, it was a bit hard telling her all this as she has been so good and so nice to me, she understood that I have some reservations and she didnt insist, in comparison with other agencies ( from the UK) who will bug u until u actually sign the contract.... anyway I hope I didnt make a bad decision!

Well done on waiting for the right job, it's very easy to jump at the first offer you get. Remember that they will have no qualms with rejecting the candidates they don't feel are right for the job, so you shouldn't have any either.

Yes that is true, I intend on staying with this company for a few more months to get more experience, Ive been here 2 years already, the truth is I dont get on with my manager he tried to get me fired once, didnt increase my salary ( but I did get money off them in other ways) my other boss is a total witch and I mean it, but the job is very relaxing and I dont get stressed after I leave the office, I dont have to do over time, I am paid enough so I believe, and the ppl I work with apart from the 2 senior ppl are excellent, and to be honest with you the job is dead easy, so there are a few cons and pros when it comes to my job, but I do like it, and I am willing to ignore the negative side of things! I just hope I will not regret it and in the long run I am sure I can get other positions maybe even better than what I was offered in the first place. Though I have to admit I have learned a valuable lesson from all this...do not run after MONEY!!!

Had the same problem with a recruitment agency in dublin recently - the girl insisted I go for the job interview (for the practice!) even though I explained the job was not possible to commute to from where I live - went for the interview - got the job(!) and had to ring the agency to advise them I would not be taking it. She was not happy - told me she'd ring me if something suitable came up for me but I knew from her tone that she wouldn't - tried to ring her a few times but she never returned my calls..........

See I dont understand why they insist even though they know from ur tone that u are really not intrested, I had a very bad experience with a rec agency in St.Stephen Green, a UK company.

The exact same thing said the other girl " that she will contact me if anything suitable comes along" in fairness to her she was very good and very nice, but I would have left after a few months, oh and one of the things that put me off completly when I went to the interview was the accountant looking at my legs which was a bit embarassing, while he was explaing the job! Maybe it was just me
