I want to record from both terrestrial TV and Sky Digital (I don't have Sky+) to my laptop's hard drive. What's important to me is that there is very little or no quality loss, and that I can edit the recorded material from my laptop. I only have a 4:3 TV but my laptop has a widescreen monitor so I want programmes broadcast in WS to be 16:9 on my lappy. What do I need to buy to best do this? Will any auld DVD recorder do it?

Well first issue is that if recording direct into PC then the best you can record in is s-video to the PC as thats all thats supported no scart RGB or component unless you spend a lot of money on some specialist equipment.

You can offset the quality loss a little bit of your Sky box has an s-video output or you buy a scart RGB to s-video converter.

This tuner has the required inputs and should capture the video without a problem.

The other method would be through a DVD recorder though it will be using some sort of compression on the video to fit it to a DVD unless you use the best quality setting but then are bound by a limited amount of recording time.

I know some models have hard drives built in so recording time would not be a problem but some brands do not all allow access to that area but ones from Kiss do allow access but I cannot say for certain what other brands also allow this.
