Will my Irish PS3 work in the States?

    Hi all,

I'm going to NYC for four weeks on Wednesday, want to bring my PS3. I know I will need a transformer, I know exactly where to get it there. The TV I will be using wont be HD, so I will bring my AV component cables.

As for the games I have... they are all PAL, and the only TV's that seem to be made with more than one signal in mind are all this side of the pond. So I might as well leave those here. Will games rented/bought over there work on my ps3 though?

ps3 games are region free, so yes games you rent or buy will work.

I know that they are region free, but would the games work for me while Im actually there? Im referring to NTSC/PAL issues, as well as the actual interface menu of the PS3. I used to bring my PS2 over to play Pro Evo as it wasnt available there, and it was the one game that worked because it had both PAL and NTSC options.

But the screen just bounced up and down in monochrome until you select that option!

Not quite sure what you mean there but as long as your PS3 is connected to a relatively modern lcd tv via HDMI or component I think it should work just fine.

Im going to NY tomorrow myself and had this very conversation with my cousin yesterday. Unfortunately we didnt get to the bottom of it. If you get it all connected up would it work if you rented games over their?

Im going to briing my PSP instead. Will i need a transformer to charge that?

I dont think so. My brother went to the states last week, took his psp and he only brought one of those socket things so he could plug the charger he got with it into a U.S. electrical socket.

Im almost certain that psps will work over there(my cousin had his in canada last year) to be safe to look see if it says it can take 100~240v on the charger. If it does then you onlt need an adapter to fit it into the plug , if it doesnt you need to get a step up transformer (makes 110v 220v). I cant remeber what the psp charger looks like but ,On my laptop charger its written on the black box thats half way along the wire but for my phone or ipod its written on the part you plug into the wall. Check all your appliances before plugging them in cause it potentially could ruin your device! If you need to buy a step up the pharmacy beside the empire state building had one for $15, a freind of mine paid $50!

I've been checking around again today to see if the PS3 will work, its like a completely grey area! Its too bloody heavy and cumbersome to get there with it and not have it work, so i need to be sure. Should I call Sony themselves, if they even have such a number in Ireland?

The PS3 will work in the states as I am pretty sure like the slim line PS2 it accepts the voltage from any region. But the tv youre using it on must accept PAL signals, more recent televisions do accept the signal, but older models usually dont.

Yeah, thought so. My mate over there only has an ageing Sony standard TV, so it looks like there is no point in bringing it. We could only play one game, Pro Evo, before on the PS2... which was fine with us, because it had the NTSC option. Up to the point where you select that option on the game, the screen was black and white and bounced up and down.

So therefore, the PS3 interface would do the same thing. But if I bought/rented a game over there, seeing as that game would carry an NTSC signal, (and with autostart on) do you reckon it would just load up and display normally?

    Hopefully that made sense.....
