Great day out at the Zoo, very happy with the shots. The Bigma was behaving itself and caught a nice shot of the Wolf in the grass (Shot a 500mm @1/320th and f7.1) I had about 40 shots I was happy with so heres the best five. All overexposed by one third of a stop brought back to -0.80 in exposure in PS and Guys actions ran on them. I wanted to show the animals without any fences in the background which I could do apart from the Elephants. Nice talking to everybody too. :)

    Including your own.
As I said elsewhere, it's great to see how people saw the same thing so differently.
The value of these meet-ups is very apparent, when you see how much we can all learn, from each other.

Some fantastic shots there. I know it's unavoidable, but it's a damn crying shame about the fences in some of them. You'd think they were taken in rainforest or darkest Africa if it wasn't for them. Great shots folks, well done!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,764 ✭✭✭Valentia

Yeah great stuff folks! Darren's elephants for me!

    Yeah, I agree.
    Definitely one of the best.
Did well to hide the fences.

Junkie chimp for me, such a good expression.

I understood Valentia's comment to mean, of the elephant shots, Darren's were the best.

I am of the same opinion.

Did anyone get nice shots of the otters?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,966 ✭✭✭elven

Paul's third shot, of the gorilla, I think is fantastic. Looks like a grumpy old man! It'd be lovely to get a bit more detail in his face - although it could be my crappy laptop screen that's stopping me seeing it as it should be.

Excellent, excellent stuff, from everyone. Need to head up there at some point to see the ickle baby elephant :)

Was it a case of 'he with the longest lens wins'...?

And I mean that in a non innuendous way, of course...

have to say I was pretty intimadated with the lenses on show alright.. talk about the peacock showing off..

The quality of the shots from the big lenses in my opinion is a lot better than anything i took with the tamron. They've impressed me so much I think I might become a member of the L club sooner rather than later.

No, there were plenty opportunities to get great shots, with shorter lenses.
My 300mm f/2.8 was too long for the elephant enclosure.
Had to change to a 75-300mm

The football field is the only place that I'm comfortable whipping out a big lens, but I'm glad I overcame my shyness yesterday, because I learned so much about the lens and I'm fairly happy with what I got.

With some animals it was hard to get a good photo, due to the thick glass. But, we did our best.

As for longest lens, I think Darren had the largest lens, but I think I used the longest shot for the baby giraffe - 100-400mm with 2X extender. So, the image was taken at 800mm. :D Then add the 1.6 crop factor ... err 1280mm ??

It was a brilliant day out, with so many great photos.

Oh, I sent an email to Dublin Zoo, and told them to check out this thread, to have a look at some of the photos taken, and if they'd like to use any images I would put them in contact with the relevant person. Who knows.

Don't be afraid to whip it out more often! :D The quality is amazing, not all down to the lens of course ;)

They might get back, I mailed them ages ago and got a reply, but they havent updated the web site in ages. Last news was 30/01/2006.

Oh dear, you are all going to hate me now - slightly long lens here 400/5.6 - borrowed one though. The oryx and giraffe shots are in fact with a 400 + 1.4 tc - which is what 560mm? On a 1.6 crop sensor, thats err... 896mm?  :D

I love Darren's first three shots (elephants, and the chimps), Paul's junkie chimp, borderfox's chimp, amie's tight rhino shot, city-exile's orangutans kissing. Top shots!

Paulw's and bovril's baby elephant shots - wow - they are the shots I wanted to take - I am really jealous!

City-exile, I did get a few shots of the otters, but none worth posting here tbh. I will upload one to flickr later and link it here.

    Here are my final picks.

    The Jaguar
    682482790_c6b7e97b7f.jpg

Prince Kong / Citizen Kong (can't decide on the title)
    682484744_5095cff5dc.jpg

    Ronnie, the orangutan girl.
    693047864_fc1f617611.jpg

    The Thirsty Tiger
    681631011_627c514919.jpg

I can't decide on the last one, so I will leave it at four! Apologies!

Thanks again, that was such fun and productive day!

Lovely shots there, Positron, but the Thirsty Tiger really stands out. It's full of wonderful colour, with fantastic detail! Could have been taken in Siberia!

positron I'd take any of your shots over mine.. the baby orangutan and the tiger shot are amazing.

Class shots Biker.ie. Lots of great shots from everbody. I could sit at the Tiger enclosure all day to get a good shot, beautiful looking creatures.

The Tiger must have the same route around the enclosure as when I seen it last. Sigma 70-200 f2.8 with a 1.4x tc
