External HDD problem

The external hard drive is not showing up any longer. This has happened before for no apparent reason but this time I accidentally mixed up the USB hub, which the external HDD is connected to, and the broadband router power supply cables. The USB hub made a noise so I knew something was wrong. Could this have affected the external HDD? Is there any other way of getting the external HDD to show up? I've tried restarting and disconnecting / reconnecting the external HDD.

Just checked, The USB hub is 5v output and the router is 9v output.

Is there any yellow exclamation marks beside any of the devices in Device Manager? (Control Panel->System->Hardware) Make sure it is powered on before you attempt to connect the usb cable to the usb port on your machine as I've had a few users who done it the other way around and it wouldn't show.

The device is no showing up under device manager.

There are two USB plugs for the external HDD and I have tried plugging them into both the USB hub and directly into the CPU ports to no avail. I have just tried putting the one which appears to be the power supply USB before the pther one to no avail.
