anyone on here drink in Mickeys?

talk about a pub going rapidly downhill. i've been going there for 12 years plus and never have i come across such a worse set of barpeople in there.
the service is terrible...one in particular forgets who he/she is serving and 2 weeks ago they were sreving beer in irish coffee glasses as they ran out of glasses. ffs.

the male toilets are disgraceful. they constantly stink of piss.

and as for the music in there...when theres a dj...you cant stay inside and chat cos the ****er is playing his jungle ****e too loud...so loud in fact that its a pain in the ear outside as well.

and as for the new bouncer...can someone tell him to move a bit to the side and stop leaving only a quarter of the door width for people to pass by.

and whats with all these jock types drinking in there thesedays?

Regular in there in at least once a week myself and my mates play the computerised golf there, but lately have been heading to Charlies instead.

    Why?

Guinness has gone shíte the service is crap and lets not get started on the staff.

Real shame coz it is one of my fave pubs in town

It has gone downhill bigtime. The guy that used to manage it is gone now and since then the place has run rampant with jocks ans scummers. Mickey's used to be nearly the only pub that didn't have a bouncer (even thought its spot-bang in the middle of the city)and that was cause the staff took are of who they served and didn't. The music has just got crap and louder. Pity, cause it was a good spot.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,648 ✭✭✭vkid

stopped going in there ages ago. Music has been well dodge for a good while and the sound is terrible. Painful to listen to the music there cos it sounds so bad.
    Agree about the toilets. Disgrace

Is this the usual "place gets slightly more popular so people line up to knock it thread"?

I've been going to Micky Martins for about 8 years now and think it's as good as ever, if people want to go to quiet pubs and hang out on their own can I recommend Portleys down by Broad St?

Since Jeff the last manager left it really has gone down hill. It used to have some of the best guinness in town I got a pint there twice recently I had to send back and one with no head whatsoever.

To rectify this the staff member attempted to top it off like lager I mean come on.

As I said it is a shame as in the winter with the fire roaring it has to be one of the most comfy pubs in town

Not for me anyway. Gave up on Mickeys ages ago. As I said music is dodgy(although not as bad as some Limerick places), toilets are rank and crowd always seemed very clicky . New toilets and a few speakers that dont hurt your ears and I might go back. :D

Never really liked the place to be honest. Don't really know what it was about the place. Just not my scene.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 753 ✭✭✭badboyblast

I have been drinking on and off over the years, not a regular but i find the music different from every other pub(does anyone agree??) Some nice laid back funk and soul.

Dont know about the jungle etc.
Some of the djs that play there have been there years so i cant`see how the music has changed!!

I talk to some people into there music and always mention mickeys as a pub to visit when in Limerick.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 876 ✭✭✭bigphil2

I have played in Mickeys for about 5 years now,and yes the Dj's have changed over the years but the are a couple (myself included ) that have consistently stayed away from music that most bars play (bar maybe the chicken),yes i agree the sound needs overhauling (its a wiring problem essentially),also the crowd in Mickeys has always rotated and at the moment their seems to be the jock crowd who have discovered it (5 years after everyone else) they will go after a while ,the sound will be sorted out.
I dont know who was playing Jungle music (unless thats some sort of racist term for music of black origin,in which case **** off somewhere else cause your in the wriong place to be moaning about that)...

I hope that people give the place an chance to show its true colours over the coming months cause I have enjoyed my time there and will continue to for the distant future....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 66 ✭✭trevufc

just as well mickeys dont pay you to dj eh? ;)

as for the reference to jungle music - have you never heard some auld ones use this term? nothing racist about it - so watch it with your uninformed claims there boss! the term jungle music is usualy associated to some ridiculously over loud dance music - the type mickeys seems to specialise in these days.

as for you - never heard of you. :)

also you might do us all here a favour and point this thread out to however runs mickeys these days. thanks.

Hey trevufc, what bar's do u normally drink in?

I am a regular in MM also and I do notice the langer's playing the golf game allright. Jacks do probably rival those from Trainspotting but aside from that always had good craic in there. Crowd never bothers me as it adds to the ambiance of the place. No matter what pub you go to in Limerick you are always going to get the pricks that play the golf machine and then spout their mouths off behind the safety of their P.C on the internet. You don't like MM's then just F*CK of and drink elsewhere, maybe you just had a bad experience in the men's jacks or something with one of your
drunken golf buddies? Did he try and putt something in your hole?? <Pun there>:D The music always rocks.......

very adult of you. this board is for discussions not name calling.
but if your post is anything to go by youre one of the ppl who have dragged mickeys down.

re-read my original post boss - i'm not giving out about jocks playing golf. far more wrong with the place than that.

address the points in my original post ie the barstaff etc like a good manwoman. ;)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,534 ✭✭✭sioda

At the risk of getting Banned I take high offence to Mr Fitts comments.

The golf machine in Mickeys is no worse than poker machines. Myself and my mates who play bring decent business to Mickeys. Not only that but we are also regular drinkers in there.

It worries me that you cant manage to read the ops original post.

And Trev i'm no jock ;)

Just to let you know,Jungle music is a type of Drum n Bass music ,but somehow i dont think music knowledge is your strong point,as for uninformed opinions, they are opinions and i am well informed about the both the good and the bad points about Mickey Martins so thats that matter cleared up.

Just 1 point though,if I was frequenting a place for 12 years ( you must drink there during the week, although i probably know you),and i had a problem with the place, boards wouldn't be the place to register your complaint,as the owner wont ever see it rendering your complaint useless.Maybe if you let the management know your complaints (not just you,i mean all the people that have a problem) then they would be prompted fairly quickly into action..

p.s i wasn't calling you racist but that term Jungle Music was used for loud music in the 50's and its 2007 now so it sounds racist..

As for Mr Fitt, dont worry about him ,he forgot to take his medication obviously and was trying to wind everyone up and seems to have done a fairly good job..

I think this is a healthy discussion about the place.. well healthier than the toilets anyway...

first off...what sort of respectable DJ posts at 8.30 am? unless of course youre just in the door from "da club" :D

me? music knowledge? youre dead right...i havent a clue boss!

as for all the presumptions..its turning into a game of guess who or cluedo now... who killed mickeys? it must have been the golf playing jocks with the lead piping in the dirty jacks! :D

i'm glad you've realised this is a discussion.

and no the term jungle music does not sound racist in the year 2007. cop on.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,648 ✭✭✭vkid

well if he's a dj there he's hardly going to agree with people thinking the music is ****e cos he's playing it. Probably should be open to criticism though and its not just one person criticising it

"also you might do us all here a favour and point this thread out to however runs mickeys these days. thanks." - trevufc
Probably the best statement made on the thread! Used to drink there a fair bit and i wouldnt have a clue who the owner is

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,534 ✭✭✭sioda

The discussion about the toilets really is funny though. I mean any regular there will tel you the toilets all got face lifted last year and painted. You are always going to have probs in a place that old with loo's in the basement. Hell even new places can't get it right Flannery's being a perfect example.

And down with all this golf bashing :(

    I never said I was a respectable Dj..the reason I posted at 8.30 is because I
get up early on Saturdays.(is It A crime?)

THe Jungle music thing I think we can agree to disagree on because its one persins view V's another (same as musical taste)..
I for 1 hope you give Mickeys a chance and come back as it is the diversity of the people that go there that is/was the reason people went there in the first place..You dont want the Jock's taking over the bar completely, iee:you need people there to rip the piss out of them...

Glad we are having this discussion but again, the owner will never see this ,but i will pass on the (constructive) criticism..:D :D:D

Any idea when the sound is going to be sorted out?
I do find it unbearable loud inside the pub so any time I'm there in usually standing outside with my mates. It sorta puts me off going there (unless its sunny/warm/not raining) which is a shame cause it is a good pub in a city full of sh1te ones.
The main problem I do have with it though is its so 'local'. Even the music (over the last year or so) played there reflects that. Its very limited and seems to stick to one genre of 'Dance' music and IMO all the DJ's there more or less play the same stuff every night. (I don't think I've ever heard Jungle Music in there! but it would be a refreshing change). This quote is on their myspace page 'The last Saturday of every month is Funktion in Mickey's, an exclusive night of rare 45's and nothing but, hosted by A2DF and Rainers, featuring a rotating roster of guest DJ's.'.
Its a niche pub, I personally enjoy what goes on there but it can be quite tedious at times, It could do with a bit of variety otherwise it will never get back the vibe of being an interesting and diverse spot in the city centre.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 876 ✭✭✭bigphil2

It is in the process of being sorted out,it's (as i am sure you can appreciate) a costly process.

Nice to have some constructive criticism...

Hope you keep coming as you said it is a unique bar in the town..

I visited Mickeys a few weeks ago (Saturday) as aprt of a stag. We had all tweaked our drinking skills in Limerick and it had been the first time back in mickeys for a while and it seemed much the same as it had last been.

Agree about it being a good pub.

So 'local ' as oppposed to what global? It caters well and reflects some kind of community in the city centre.

    As for that last quote
    Funktion is a great night.

What diversity or variety would you suggest?

    clique (klk, klk)
    n.
A small exclusive group of friends or associates.

I've always disliked Cliquey Martins. Theres something about they "hell ya dude, like, ya know, I've been drinking here since Junior Cert. results night, and so has the rest of the lads here - so who the fcuk are YOU anyway" vibe thats just so fcuking smalltime.

I always think of Cliqueys as being the sitting-room of self-congratulation, where the cliques stand around in little circles, pint in hand ignoring each other as they scan the room for other compadres - AKA - Fcuking Mickheads :D

P.S. To be forced to stand in a shoebox bog up to your knees in Mickhead piss isn't recreation or socialising - its a minor form of torture, check the Geneva convention.

I was not disputing that Funktion isn't a good night, I was saying that its rather a niche club not really for a diverse range of people.
And I agree with raiser about it being very cliquey. There is a group of guys who may as well be part of the furniture.

I've been drinking in MM on and off for about 10 yrs. It's the same now as then its fine mon-thur, but fri, sat and sun it's full and not worth going near the place. You can't get near the bar for the throngs of sloppy idiots who wouldn't know a good pub if it kicked them in the ass. As for DJ's if u don't like what they play don't go there, and the barstaff are helpful and friendly

Music in Mickeys is deadly! And your opinion that people going there at the weekends wouldnt know a good pub if it kicked them in the ass is just stupid!
