    Hi,

I received a laptop from a Polish friend as a gift with windows xp preinstalled however the language setiings are in Polish. I tried changing it back to English in the Regional and language options in the control panel to no avail. I then decided I would install Windows xp English verison over the pre installed one and format the hard drive. The only problem is that when I boot from this cd first and then get to the part where you have to choose from the options to install xp hit enter, to access recovery console hit R etc it just hangs and doesn't go anywhere. Would anybody have any advice?

    Rgds

you need to say more about the laptop, what make, model, if any backup software like norton go-back is installed.
    how old it is also.
is the cd scratched at all? is the dvd/cd rom working properly?

Hi Average Joe. Its a fujitzu seimans laptop, and the DVD Rom drive works on it because it can read the disc when logged into windows.

You can't change the language by changing the regional/language settings, as far as I know. You have to install the version of XP in the language you desire, such as English or German.

To install over the Polish version of XP, boot from your English-language version and choose the option to set up Windows now [I think you just press enter]; don't launch the recovery console even though you probably could use fdisk there.

When you get to the partitioning screen, delete all partitions and create your own custom layout. Windows creates just one partition by default.

OOPS, just read your post again. Above info is no good to you :(

Don't forget that you'll need another XP license since microsoft only offer langauge changes for volume licenses ( there are some optional langague packs but they are for langagues like irish were there isn't full localisation , they will most likely require a separate license when there is full localisation )

irish langague pack - only works on english XP

The method MUI is distributed hasn't changed. MUI is not available through retail channels and it is sold only through volume licensing programs such as the Microsoft Open License Program (MOLP/Open), Select, and Enterprise agreement (or with a new computer as an OEM version from your PC manufacturer where available).

Check that the CD is clean - try copying all of it to the HDD to make sure no data error
