Sunday Premium rates

    Hey folks, just wanted something cleared up here.

    Are companies required by law to provide some form of premium rate / compensation to individuals working on Sundays and Bank Holidays?

    In case it's important, i'm working in retail selling computers.

    Bump.... nearly 40 view and nobody who works knows whether or not theyre meant to get anything extra for working sundays? :(

    When it comes down to it companies have very few obligations outside the minimum wage ..... if you're unionised it's a different story.

    I work in retail and receive no Sunday premium. I'm assuming it's not a legal requirement. In a previous, state job, I got double time on Sundays and treble time on Bank Holidays.

    read your contract if it says no overtime then you dont get overtime.

    It's not a legal requirement. Some larger retail companies etc offer it to entice staff to cover Sundays but it's by no means required. However, if your contract states specific days that DON'T include Sundays you are not obliged to work them.

    Afaik, a lot of this comes down to whether you work full time or not and whether Sunday would be a "normal" workday for you. If it's overtime on a Sunday you should get more than basic, if it's a regular shift, I don't know if you are entitled to extra but I know some places do it as a matter of course (generally so people will work Sundays for them, which isn't a very popular day to work on for most people).

    Sunday Premiums seem to be a little known entitlement that unless specifically referred to in your contract (i.e. it's all included in the wage), must be paid.

    If not already included in the rate of pay, employees are generally entitled to paid time off in lieu or a premium payment for Sunday working. Some industries have registered employment agreements containing regulations on Sunday working.

    Where there is no collective agreement in place, the employer should look at the closest applicable collective agreement, which applies to same or similar work under similar circumstances, which provides for a Sunday premium.
