I have a friend that is looking for a laptop for her daughter (about 12-13 yrs old) she really just wants it to use internet, watching dvds, store music, connect ipod and camera to it, store photos and maybe do some photo editing.

i presume the biggest thing here is memory
dont think itll be used for games so doesnt need graphics card?

can anyone tell me what are the most important specs she should look for?
she doesnt want to spend fortune on it either

    thanks in advance :)

    Cost.

Pick a price point and see what you get for the specs. For a low-end system that will do the job, you are talking in the region of €500-€600.
