Hi, a friend of mine has just got a bill from customs for 50 euros for an airsoft ak-47 thats worth 116 euros, the order came from rsov in hong kong. Isnt 50 quid way to much seen as its pretty much half the value of the order itself.
    thanks,
    kink

You have to add in the cost of packaging and shipping as well. They are also subject to VAT. (stupid I know)

So, VAT is charged on the total cost, not just the purchased items.

What was the total cost of the order?

Not to mention there is usually a handling fee tacked on too.

Haven't pushed the big red button..not yet anyway. My finger is lingering.

Sorry OP for letting this thread go off topic by the way. It just took a strange turn.

50 does seem like quite a lot for VAT on something which cost 116. Did you get a breakdown on all the areas they're charging you? The percentage of the overall, the handling fees etc. Sometimes there is some confusion between currency. Could be the blame.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,542 ✭✭✭kinkstr

I shouldnt of asked who tony was.

As i said above it was a friend who has the customs bill hanging over his head, as far as i know he just got a bill from them for 50 quid. Ive been lookin on the revenue website and there is a 3.5% customs charge but even with that and vat 50 still seems way to high. A customs handling charge is a tad strange since they get paid for "handling" packages in the first place.

I agree with you there. You have to pay them to molest your AEG. Unfortunately that's how the system works though.

I haven't had to pay any myself. There was once a UPS charge but that was pretty small.

Have you tried working out all the costs? adding the 21% additional charges etc? If it's quite a big deal under 50 then he should ring them up.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 36,170 ✭✭✭✭ED E

Theres VAT Duty and PO handling fee. We paid like a fiver duty, 24 PO handling and loads of VAT.

    50 is way to high!

it was €116 total for the order all inclusive. i missed the delivery and was just left with a delivery notice which had a customs charge of €50.86 handwritten in the box, no further breakdown of costs.(also have to collect it from a depot two postcodes away instead of the one not 500 yards from my house, i love this country)
ill be ringing customer support this morning but i know well ill just be told that its nothing to do with them and to contact customs. who will tell me to pay it and try claim it back, its taken nearly a month to get this far and to be honest its not been worth any of the hassle, id nearly let the thing go back and try get my money back from rsov.com.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,044 ✭✭✭Wossack

think I paid 30e on a 180e gas pistol (delivery and related charges included™), so somethings amiss here...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,414 ✭✭✭kdouglas

vat + po charge + duty normally works out at around 24/25% of the total order including delivery

vat is 21% and the rest adds on the extra couple of percent

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,458 ✭✭✭✭gandalf

silver haze why would you send it back to RSOV. Its not Keiths fault someone in customs made an error and importing goods fron Hong Kong you run the risk of this.

Your best bet is pay it and claim back the overcharge. By the figures provided by everyone here you should have paid around €30.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 173 ✭✭silver haze

as in just leave it go back, get my money back minus the delivery and just cut my losses. i know its nothing to do with rsov. but im just that sick of it now.
i was on to customs and they said i would have to go to the post office and sent it back for re-evaluation. i told him i wouldnt be goin out of my twice for their mistake. he said to collect it and write a letter querying the charge along with the invoice and customs charge sheet. and if im due refund ill get it in 6 weeks or so.
when i bring in my car they can go fúck themselves if they think im paying a penny VRT for at least a year.
    Robbing scumbags.
rant over now, all i can do is hope it lives up expectations of being worth all the hassle.

found this on the revenue site.

    http://www.revenue.ie/index.htm?/leaflets/pn1179.htm

there is an email link on the bottom. might be worth sending an email and asking what the process for a refund is...

edit: sorry i see you now know...

yeah i saw that site alright, but thanks anyways.
am goin to collect it first and see what documents were included so i have evey fact to hand before i start into them.

I wonder if you can take Customs to the small claims court??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,341 ✭✭✭Fallschirmjager

    i just got a 23 euro charge on a 100 dollar +shipping delivery..

i would say if you keep the documentation, and query -- you will get it back.

Nah...small claims court is for consumers vs service or goods providers.

When you deal with customs, it's victim vs predator :)

I had an order in from Redwolf last week for a few parts. Foregrip, mag and flash hider for an mp5, totaled about 60 euro plus shipping. Arrived on Friday, nailed for customs, €26. Maybe the higher charges are a new trend? I've only been hit for customs once before on an order about the 150 mark and was only charged 20.
It's gotten me worried about the order I placed on Thursday. Two gbb's, three mags and shipping came to above 320. Am I going to have to remortgage the house?

Thats why I only order from UK sites now. I makes life alot easier and quicker not to have to deal with customs, weather they are right or wrong.

I don't care how cheap the stuff from HK is, because to me it just aint worth it, who want to be giving the government more money than they have to.

BTW: what the heck is wrong with this site today, I have to keep double clicking and having to hit refresh all the time.

I shoulod get my M4 tomorro, came to €230 inc shipping, so ill let you know how much customs was and how it breaks down.... but hopfully i wont be paying anything.

From the English sites ive seen its still more expensive to buy here, but feel free to show me a link with a similar priced Cyma AK.

I've a Classic Army MP5 on the way with a rake of mags, battery, charger, mask, goggles, rail, foregrip, lamp and sling, cost an absolute fortune from Hong Kong and its still cheaper than buying from ther UK. Even if I get stung with customs, it'll be about the same.

So I reckon you get a better deal from Asia than you ever will from the UK, notably with larger orders. I'll let you know how much it all cost and how much customs charge as I reckon there's no chance of it getting through.

lads, relax...buy where you want. if you are more comfortable getting it in the uk, get it there, if you are not...dont..

noone needs peer justification by someone else purchasing from the same site..to each their own...

I could be wrong, but I think you may have misread or misunderstood his post Ambro...

He wasn't complaining about the fact that his friend had been hit by a customs charge, but that it looked like he was overcharged, and was asking for peoples opinions.

    Eeeeuuuuww!

    Soz for 'spoiling' your thread.

There, I've deleted my posts. And yes, you're being overcharged. Now, 'big' man, what you gonna do about it?

Must be the surreptitious, psychological after-effects induced by my Missus' spending habits: I just refuse to see them these days, i.e. some sort of mental "pre-image-processing" block, since now I know how much they *really* cost...

But I am taking heed, so that's that ;)
