Recently got myself a supercheap PC, however, it didn't have an OS on it.

So for now I've been temporarily using someone else's windows which I haven't activated (5 days left)

I was thinking I have to go out and buy Windows XP off ebay or wherever, but its still gonna cost a packet..

    BUT

Just looking on the side of the computer, I've noticed a Windows XP media centre sticker, with the CD KEY on it..

So my question is, can I just buy a Media Centre edition CD (for cheap) and use this CD KEY? or is each CD key unique to that copy of windows?

    thanks

Cd key is will only work with the OS it was designed for. I have a copy of Media Center but its registered to me (the licence is). I can sell you the cd's if you are interested and you can use your own cd key.

It's most likely an OEM (original equipment manufacturer) license.. so it would have to be a Dell/HP/etc. version of Windows Media Centre for the key to work. I seriously doubt it would work on a new purchased copy.

Anyway if you purchase a copy of Media Centre it'll come with it's own license :)

Not true. As long as it's the correct version (ie. OEM sticker & OEM CD) then any media centre CD will work. The branding on the disk doesn't matter. It won't activate online though, you'd have to ring Microsoft to manually do it but they will.
