How do I change my screen resolution up to 1024x768 ?

I've just installed Windows xp on my pc but the screen settings are installed as 800x600 instead of 1024x768 which means the tray and the bottom of the screen and the desktop icons are all too large.

The pc and monitor is capable of displaying 1024x768 as the display is usually ok. I have changed the HD only, and the pc and monitor are the same as before and both can display the 1024x768 setting.

I have gone to Control Panel, clicked on Display, clicked on the Settings tab, then tried to slide the Screen Resolution slider along but it won't move.

Any ideas as to how I can change the screen resolution?

    Thanks!

Is it greyed out, along the resolution bar or it just won't move any further?

Just won't move from the minimum setting.

The bar looks normal, not greyed out.

Sounds like you dont have the drivers installed for your graphics hardware.
    Try downloading http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/System-Info/Belarc-Advisor.shtml
It should tell you what hardware you have.

You need to reinstall the graphics drivers.

you might have to load software that came with your monitor to get monitor driver. if you cant, you should be able to download a driver to match xp with your monitor

    Thanks.

I've just downloaded the software from the softpedia.com site.

I've run the program and it states various info such as OS, System Model and Processor but I don't see any mention of a graphics driver, and the word graphics doesn't appear to be mentioned anywhere in the displayed info.

Ok, try go to control panel, display properties, click settings tab ,then click advanced button. now click monitor tab ,here you can see what driver your monitor is using and should be able to change/add new driver from here. running an exe file you downloaded may not have changed the driver.

What make is the computer? If it's a dell you should be able to get the drivers you need off the site no problem.

Thanks alias123, I've just gone to that section and in the 'Monitor type' section it states 'Default Monitor'. There is a 'Properties' button but it is not active and therefore cannot be clicked.

In the 'Monitor settings' section underneath there is a there is 'Screen Refresh Rate:' and in this there is one option which is 'Use Hardware Default Setting' which is selected.

I don't see anything for adding or changing a driver.

    Hi, yes it's a Dell.

If I go to the Dell site how do I know what I'm looking for? What do I look for?

What is listed under the Adapter tab, beside Monitor?

Link to Dell Support is here, enter in the model and it will bring up a list of drivers. The graphics/display driver should be listed there for download.

There is an 'Adapter Type' section with a "Properties" button which is active.

Then below this there is a 'Adapter Information' section with

    Chip Type
    DAC Type
    Memory size
    Adapter String
    Bios Info

All of which is stated as being "Unavailable".

Then there is a 'List all modes' button at the bottom which is active.
