Advice: starting tennis

    Hi,

I'm looking for some advice. I was thinking of trying my hand at tennis because I want something social to do one or two evenings a week during the summer. I do play other sports but there is gap in my schedule developing. I'd also like to play something that isn't all leg (I cycle) but that is a bit of an upper body work out to.

The snag is I'm 24 and I've only ever played a couple of times as a kid so Im really starting from scratch. Do adults to this? and if so is it possible to find people at that level to play with? Is it worht me taking a few lessons to start off?

I live in the Knocklyon area so anywhere in that general part of Dublin I could go to a club etc.

    Any help is greatly appreciated.

Plenty of adults take up tennis despite never having played it before. You certainly won't find it hard to find people of your own standard in most clubs. I'd say you should get some lessons at the start, but not one on one. A lot of clubs will have group sessions for members, they're a great way to meet others in the same boat, cheaper than one on one lessons, and help you get the technique right from the start to help avoid injuries due to bad form as you play more and more! There are lots of clubs around in Dublin, a comprehensive list can be found on the Tennis Ireland website at this link:

Most will have a club night for you to try them before committing, just pick one and phone for details.

Yep, just pick a club that is handy for you to get to and contact them to get membership details and details of any group coaching they do. Everyone who belongs to a club will tend to simply recommend their own club, but ultimately all clubs will have their good points and their bad ones, so you're best bet is to show up on a club night and have a chat with someone who can give you the details. Maybe do that in a few different clubs before making your final selection!
