You know i think people underestimate what you can do with custom firmware besides all the illegal copyright infringement crap which is more likely to annoy the uninitiated. Downloading iso's is for the weak!!

Anyhoo.. there are several apps for the psp which take advantage of the wifi connection in some ways. For example, with pimpstreamer, you can stream all your movies (full-wide screen, all formats) and music direct to your psp from your pc anywhere in the house/ in range of the router.

With pspradio, you can stream shoutcast radio anywhere in the house/in range of router. (bitrate dependant).

If you want to wake up the pc from hibernate, you could use psp wake on lan (psp wol). I haven't got this working from power off yet unfortunatly.

Now, you might think its too much hardship to be going downgrading firmwares but i must say it is very easy. Ive done two friends psps in the last week with a copy of lumines i bought in xtra vision for 9 eur. Just remember to follow all the steps like restoring default settings and formatting memory stick like your psps life depended on it (it does).

There are so many homebrew applications aside from wifi its crazy not to install a custom firmware on yer psp. Theres working snes, n64, and sega emulators, i mean seriously, who doesnt want to play mario all stars, flashback or micro machines on their psp?

Theres also cheat applications you can get for all your games if you are so inclined. Theres custom XMB themes, icons, waves, gameboots (custom firmware specific) you can apply. And if anything ever fecks up, go into recovery mode and sort it out.

Theres IRC clients, VNC clients (remotely operate yer pc!) email clients, IM clients and so much more. If you are into something its probably there to do with the PSP. I had never flashed any filesystem before doing my PSP. I did my research at the time, and by golly did it prove to be worth it.

You could do it yourself. Dont pay anyone to do it. Seriously.

Grab a copy of Lumines from game or xtra vision.

    Download these files:
    3.50 Update (read readme included)
    Easy Downgrader to 1.50

    Go here
    http://www.pspmod.com/forums/firmware/17499-guide-how-downgrade-3-10-3-50-1-50-a.html

Now you dont need any files off that link, only the two above. Follow the readme in the 3.50 update first. Then have a look at the tutorial linked above. Easy.

Nick_oliveri - is there anyway to view youtube on it yet?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,497 ✭✭✭Nick_oliveri

No sadly, you can only download the vids to the psp itself via the RSS feed (integrated non custom firmware browser)

And I'm guessing by now Amp is blue in the face outlined the NO LINKING TO BACKED UP GAMES / WAREZ...

As the Lumines exploit has completed reopened PSP homebrewing and hacking perhaps its time the PSP had its own sticky list of links?

(I'd start it myself but I don't think I'm the best qualified, I'm not a long time contributor, and only a recent lurker; the custom firmware on my PSP hasn't been used to do anything special either; also I'm unclear on whether linking to ISO ripping applications is as bannable as linking to warez)

Youd probably get a warn and the link removed. Theres two arguments to iso rippers, one being for backing up your own legally obtained UMD's, and the other warez route.

Its a slippery slope. Best off not to post the link.:D

Agreed. Perhaps an update to the Forum Charter would be needed? (More work for for Amp, two posts in on this forum and I imagine I've already given him a headache... )

So, something like this would go for the PSP section of the Console Modding Charter?

    ALLOWED:
    • Linking to custom firmware that may (may as opposed to will) brick your PSP.
(Reason: There is always a risk with this stuff.)
    • Linking to information on how to downgrade the PSP operating system, or upgrade custom firmware, or any information on the the GTA: Liberty City Stories or Lumines Puzzle Fusion exploits.
(Reason: This is allowed, not because it gets you one step closer to playing backed up games on your PSP but because it allows you do other cool stuff that doesn't breach the forum charter.)
    • Linking to a page on a site that is not about backing up ISOs or any other topics that are forbidden in the forum charter, but the same site does detail information elsewhere on backing up ISOs?
(Reason: Expecting everyone to read every page from a site they want to suggest before posting a link is not realistic; also, a site may add a page that breaches the charter later and for the original poster to be banned for this is unfair.)
    • Linking to a tutorial detailing instructions on how to play homebrew ISOs, though the same process could be used to play backed up ISOs?
(Reason: Tutorials linking to information on legit software shouldn't become the target of a witchhunt)

    NOT ALLOWED:
    • Linking to anything with the Trojan.PSP virus or any other software that WILL brick your PSP (as distinct from custom firmwares where there is an element of risk that is explained in the tutorials and readme.txt files).
(Reason: This forum does not need a reputation for linking to software that WILL brick your PSP because some muppet thought it would be a good prank)
    • Linking to a tutorial that details how to use a program that can rip PS/Saturn/whatever else discs to ISO files
      (Reason: Warez)
    • Linking to reflectoporn, or images of PSPs with porn as their background images.
(Reason: FFS just don't, damn it...)

    Any use?

Yeah thats in and around what one would expect from a sticky. But as you can plainly see theres not much interest in PSP modding around these parts. Doubt it would ever happen. I do know one thing though, that tutorial i linked earlier is a bit confusing.

    Now... wtf is reflectoporn? :p
    Or should i ask?

reflectoporn is the selling of shiny, reflective metal objects on sites like eBay using photos of the object that were evidently taken when the user was naked, as their reflection can be seen in the photo.

    DO NOT WANT! :D

(I bring it up as a PSP that is not switched on has a quite reflective screen on it.)

Lol i never heard of that before. I dunno if id be into that stuff, suppose it depends on the user though. Hehe.

Oh yeah in your other thread where it was suggested you upgrade to a newer custom firmware... dont bother unless there is significant benefit and functionality from doing so. 3.40 OE-A will be grand for a while. Sucks that that Dark Alex lad isn't on the scene anymore.

From the reflectoporn I've stumbled across it seems a given that the user would not be especially alluring in more traditional pornographic methods. In a word: NASTY.

That guy must have been something, he's spoken of very highly in the PSP mod circles. To me its especially annoying that he left shortly before I could mod my PSP.

Sure theres the Russian team "M33". I installed the 3.52 firmware last night out of boredom... strange thing is it seems to have fixed that problem with my fake memory stick.

Before, the PSP would not save the savegames on it because magicgate was not supported. The files would be corrupt. I hope this lasts. 4gig fake working card ftw!

whats a fake memory stick? One that is running compression on it to trick the PSP into using it as a bigger capacity?

Or something you can't talk about in this forum because it may get you banned ? :D

Fake as in copies as in cheaper memory sticks (usually slower access speeds) manufactured in god knows where and rebadged as big name brands , i.e. Sandisk etc.

Got mine from hong kong. Filed a paypal complaint, got the money back and the card is good for holding storage like movies. His loss.

So the guy tried passing it off as a real one? That's some cheek.
