I am planning to take an MA which will cost roughly €4,600. It has a one-year duration, so should be eligible for tax relief. How much can I expect to get back in tax relief? If I work in paid employment during the academic year, will this affect the tax amount I can ge back or are these separate "academic tax credits"?

I don't think there's such a thing as 'academic tax credits'. Give the revenue commisioners a shout at the PAYE help number, as to give them their due most of the people I've spoken to there over the years have been very helpful. :)

Yep Red's spot on there. No Academic Tax Credits, it comes in the form of Tax Relief up to a maximum of €5,000 per year. For a postgrad course it has to be between 1 - 4 years duration so you're ok there. It also must be on the list of approved courses below.

In relation to your last point, unless you're married, these credits are only of benefit to you if you ARE working during the year, otherwise you wouldn't be paying any tax!
