Different countries, different customs

Thought it might be a good idea to start a collection of "RULEZ AND REGULATIONZ" for specific countries that not everyone may be aware of.

I'll get the ball rolling with Italy:

If you have anything on the back of your vehicle that protrudes from the actual body of the vehicle, for example a bike carrier (even an empty bike carrier!!) you have to affix a warning sign.

This has to be 500 x 500 mm, with red and white reflective stripes and to be made out of metal (not plastic!) Any sort of -ish or handmade sign will not do.

    Like so:

Failure to display such a sign carries a fairly hefty on the spot fine and the Carabinieri have no problem escorting you to the next bank or hole in the wall to get that fine of you there and then.

That applies to all of France. You also must carry spare bulbs, Stickers to state which country u live in i.e. IRL, and Headlamp beam deflectors (Aldi are selling a European Motor Kit on sunday which would be handy to have in your motorhome should you do any travelling outside Ireland. Halfords sell the red and white reflector :D

Not 100% sure, but is it France where you have to carry a hi-viz vest too, in case of breakdown.

And this one might be an urban myth, but I was told that if you wear prescription glasses to drive you have to have a spare pair with you too.

Not an urban myth, and it should be here also. If you need glasses and they break how are you going to get home?

Those tips came just at the right time. Does anyone know how many different type bulbs are in a Fiat Maxi? Do I need that warning sign for the bikes in France? Tool Kit in the cab? Reflective vests for everyone?

    Rolex

as for the bulbs, I should think that one of these standard packs (from Halfords etc) should be quite sufficient. Hust make sure it has the right bulb (H4, H7 ?) for your front lights. All the other ones are the same for most vehicles anyway (5W /10W/ 25W)

    The rest I don't know ...

    Thanks Peasant,

I didnt know that you could actually buy a standard pack of bulbs. That makes it so much simplier.

I got the pack in Aldi on Sunday. Must say it was a good buy. I spend about €10 alone on the Headlamp Beam Reflectors in Halfords last year and i got all my replacement bulbs, sticker and reflectors for €10. Bargin!!!:D
