Here is Mossberg's review - its just destroyed any hopes of importing one!

    http://www.investorvillage.com/smbd.asp?mb=445&mn=67087&pt=msg&mid=2436032

particularly the following in the 8th paragraph:

"It only works with AT&T (formerly Cingular), won't come in models that use Verizon or Sprint and can't use the digital cards (called SIM cards) that would allow it to run on T-Mobile's network."

just saw on gizmodo, what the iPhone doesnt have... now it doesnt seem THAT good.... some fairly basic features are missing...

    • songs as Ringtones
    • Games
    • Any flash support
    • Instant Messaging
    • Picture messages (MMS)
    • Video recording
    • Direct iTunes Music Store Access (Over Wi-Fi or EDGE)
    • Voice recognition or voice dialing
    • Wireless Bluetooth Stereo Streaming
    • One-size-fits-all headset jack (May have to buy an adapter for certain headphones)

Stuff we already knew it didnt have
    • 3G (EV-DO/HSDPA)
    • GPS
    • A real keyboard
    • Removable battery
    • Expandable Storage

    jaysus....

There are better alternatives folks. No need to worry:)
Sure it looks somewhat similar to Apple's soon to be released iPhone, ever after its redesign but inside the two can't be more different, with the M8 trumping the iPhone in nearly every aspect.

better in that it runs windows or better in that they both dont have 3g?

no songs as ringtones is annoying but its not on any of my 3 phones and instant messaging will be available as an app - still iChat should have been included but apparently there will be continuous software updates.

no 3g is the only feature that would hold me back - coming in th euro version though.

so how long till they are hacked?

Speaking as a Nokia N95 owner, I would wholeheartedly recommend it as an alternative.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,225 ✭✭✭Chardee MacDennis

n95 seems like a better altenrative but two things that would hold me back are its form factor isnt as sleek and mac osx looks slick on this thing.

The iPhone is defo slicker looking alright and tbh I only looked at the iPhone demos after I had bought the N95. My first reaction was that maybe I had been too quick to get the N95 after seeing how good the iPhone looked, but now knowing what the iPhone can and can't do, I'm very happy with my purchase.

I got my 2gb the other day and uploaded a movie to the phone, having half watched it on the way home from work, when I got home I hooked it up to my 42" LCD and finished it off. I didn't even know about the TV feature uintil I saw the cable in the box.

sounds pretty sweet, hows the battery?

Still working on that, not as bad as I thought it would be, but if using the movie player, camera, GPS etc. it does take a knock. The longest length I have gone without using any multimedia and just taking calls is about 20 hours or so and the battery has remained on all bars.

I would say 2 to 3 days with moderate camera usage etc. being the average, however my last phone used a carkit so having to charge manually again ether way is a pain, but I have a charger in work and home, so I'll just make sure not to let it go to long without topping up.

For me the Nokia E61/i is a good alternative to the iPhone for now. Sure it isn't as flashy, the screen is much smaller, etc, but it's still good and has some features the iPhone does not have, like 3G and VoIP!

I *may* get an iPhone in the future, but only if they open it up to third party development and add 3G, VoIP, etc..

Been reading some reviews. Apparently the iphones headphone jack won't fit standard headphones.

If it doesn't have a SIM (assume that it is non GSM) surely roaming must be very limited ... not a problem given that most US citizens don't have a passport!

The O2 XDA's had touch screens and were never great. Mucky and scratched screens etc. Also not great for texting.

I'm watching the demo video on the iphone site...it seems to be going through standard features of most mobile networks as if they are some how unique to the iPhone.

Hmm. Now the question of whether it will require a contract.

If it does I'm hoping it fails miserably. If the iPhone succeeds despite forcing you into paying a monthly bill it could undermine the entire pre-pay market.

well it does have a sim and it hasnt forced people into contracts in the states - there is a pay-as-you-go option

Hardly, lot's of phones succeed wihtout having a prepay option (on the networks).

    So any news?

Yeah, I want one. but only with minimum 30gb, UMTS and MMS.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,225 ✭✭✭Chardee MacDennis

you can buy a pre activated phone and use it as just an ipod. only problem is that it can only be used on the itune on which it was activated.

For a network to offer/support the iPhone, an additional network component is apparently needed. I am guessing this is what allows Apple to offer the handset exclusively and where some of the doubts are coming from regarding whether it uses sim cards or what. It fully supports GSM afaik.

Apparently the 3G one will offer 16GB of memory.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,469 ✭✭✭weeder

it does take a sim card, alas its not removable without taking the iphone apart
    http://thinksecret.com/archives/iphonetakeapart/image/iphone27.jpg
as for unlocking it, its possible now .
http://iphoneunlocking.com/ they only have a 75% success rate so far

looks like Vodafone and T-Mobile are the European carriers, legit - the firmware got cracked and 4 operator logos were found - ATT, Cingular, T-Mobile, Vodafone :D

It looks like O2 has won the UK rights:

    http://business.timesonline.co.uk/tol/business/industry_sectors/telecoms/article2028678.ece

Apple are apparently negotiating individual markets so I don't where this leaves us. And no 3G either it seems.
