RTE/TV3 in Tipperary

    Hi

Sincere apologies if advance this has been covered before, but I searched this forum and couldn't find any info.:o

Due to a recent altercation with Sky, I now have a FTA satellite system and find myself without RTE/TV3 coverage. I need to install aerials for this but was quoted "€150 to €200" for the installation by the local TV shop.

    My questions are as follows:
    1) What aerials do I need?
    2) What is best transmitter to point at for West Tipperary?
    3) Will I need an amplifier(s)?
    4) Can I use CATV cable?

    Thanks in advance,
    AFD

I'm afraid you will need to be more specific than 'West Tipperary'. You may be in the overlap of Maghera, Mullaghanish and Mount Leinster main transmitters. There may even be a relay in your area, e.g. Cahir.

Sorry, I'm about 4 miles due west of Tipperary Town.

    Use Satellite cable

    North or South "West Tipp"?

A place called Lattin. Slap bang in the middle of the 'peninsula' that juts into Co. Limerick. My neighbour is off Mount Leinster I believe, but we'd be fairly equidistant from Maghera and Mullaghanish as well......

I was afraid you might be around there! You are in the overlap!

I know aerials and equipment are expensive but you will need a UHF aerial anyway. I used to live 6 miles west of you and had more money than sense. I played around a bit. The best result by far I got was a Group B UHF Quad X aerial, 24db amp and PU. Pointed it at Woodcock Hill just NE of Limerick City. I had line of sight - perfect. All 4 channels and just one aerial.

I dont know where to start with the main transmitters. OK! A Band 111 VHF aerial will get RTE1 and 2 from all three but TV3 and TG4 will require a UHF aerial. Mullaghanish is Group A. Maghera is Group C/D, I do not know what Mount Leinster is but I suspect it is Group A.

How far do you want to go?

Edit: Lattin! I would go for Woodcock Hill. Any hills between you and Woodcock Hill?

I don't mind as long as I get a picture! Went into a TV shop at lunchtime and was advised that Mullaghanish was my best bet. Bought UHF aerial, VHF aerial and Diplexer/Booster. Can return them if they don't work!

There's a hill opposite me unfortunately, and apparently that will cause problems. It has done in the past - I once had a 20ft pole on roof pointing to Keeper Hill.

    Thanks for your help

Keeper & Woodcock not in same direction though.

True. I'm aware of that. Unfortunately I'm on the south side of a nondescript hill that blocks me from anything transmitting from the north. I'll try Mulliganish anyway (on advice of Urlan TV) and if that fails I'll see if I can pick up Woodcock or Mount Leinster.
