Would reformatting not remove the partitions....?

There are a couple of things you can do- are you planning to format and install an OS of some description or do you just want a blank drive?

If you are installing Windows XP, you can delete the partitions during setup and format the drive to NTFS.

Windows can do that no problem! :D When you get to the partitioning screen, just select to delete every partition listed, having backed up your data first.

Don't continue the installation at this point -- just quit it.
