    Uh-oh :(

My D50's pop up flash (yeah yeah) was working fine last week. I tried to use it today and nothing happened :(

If I put the camera in full auto mode the flash will pop up by itself but won't fire when i press the shutter release. When I put the camera in any of the manual modes and turn on the flash in (in any flash mode) the same thing happens. I am gutted.

I bought the camera back in February... but I bought it in New York. What are the chances of Nikon UK/Ireland honouring the warranty?

i wouldn't worry about it too much, its a pretty crap flash anyway, i hardly ever use mine -- buy an external flash if required, much better , or get by without

Still.... You'd prefer if your camera was working. Might be worth playing about with everything to see if tis anything simple you didn't check?

Not too familiar with Nikon, so can't offer much I'm afraid!

Hopefully it's something simple like the bulb has gone on it rather than something electronic. maybe get it looked at here after you've looked into the warranty some more.

You sure you haven't got it set in remote commander mode or something? (is that even on the D50?) On the D80 anyway, you can put it in commander mode and set it not to fire at all. It pops up when it normally would, but only the remote flash (if there is one) fires.

I'd try getting on to Nikon about it alright... If you still have the warranty card that came with it you shouldn't have much trouble. Failing that, I'm sure they'll still repair it for you for a fee, and if it's something simple like the flash tube gone then it shouldn't be too expensive to fix.

I use my built-in flash as a fill in flash a fair bit with the main flash off-camera, so it'd be a PITA for me anyway if it stopped working...

Ok I have the warranty card. I first thought I was doing something stupid so I used recessed factory reset button on the bottom of the camera but no joy. It doesn't have any remote commander mode afaik.
Nikon's support bods think the bulb is just gone. They want me to send the camera to them in the UK with receipt and warranty card. I'm just afraid they'll reject it when they see the US warranty card/serial number.

Ah, sure what choice do you have really? I say send it off, be prepared for a phone call saying "this will cost you x pounds to fix", but there's no real way to know for sure... You didn't mention the American warranty did you? Does it state American only or international?

I haven't mentioned it to them yet. The warranty card says its only valid in the Americas. I guess I'll send it to them and hope for the best!

    Hi stephen,
Same thing happened to me with my D70, 6 months after i bought it, just overnight. i tried in auto, pointing at a very dark area and it popped up but wasn t flashing... and I had to get it fixed by Nikon indeed...:(

The only D50 I used didnt fire instantly.. took about half a second (charging time) before it would fire. Doesnt sound like the issue you are having though. Send it back to the Nikon service centre.

Scoual, did they charge you to fix it?

nope, but i was still in guarantee, i bought it at bermingham and i gave it to them so i didn t have a direct contact with Nikon.
It took 3 weeks, by the way...well, bermingham probably wanted a few days before sending it to Nikon

I ended up ordering an SB-400 from eBay rather than send the camera to nikon who might-or-might-not fix it for an undisclosed fee . I was getting tempted by an SB-600 but after a bit of thought I know I'll never use any of its extra features, plus the SB-400 is smaller, lighter, cheaper and requires half the batteries.

i bought a digital camera about 4 years ago in the states and Fuji honoured the warranty no probs, had to send it to england. Worked out fine!

as long as you didnt buy it grey or black market they will honour it as far as I am aware. Do let us know though !

I hope it works out for you
