Sorry for bringing another of these dreaded threads to the board, I am looking for practical advice on the best p&s to use as a back up to my slr. Most of these threads are started by people trying to fit it all into a budget so for arguments sake, price is not an issue - the issues are:

Image Quality, Optical Zoom, High ISO quality, Manual Controls + Metering and Near Focusing/Macro capabilities.

I have been thinking about the Samsung NV but my canon loyalty brings me back to the ixus'. Does anyone else regularly use a p&s as back up? I havent had one since my 3.1mp sony cybershot and know if i get one where the quality differs drastically (i.e. more than to be expected) from the 5D i will end up never using it which in turn defeats the purpose...

Anyway, i appreciate any advice and if there are images to back it up then even better (and again sorry for another one of these)..

i use an oldish olympus 765 p & s as backup, its a pretty good quality lens , with a 10 x zoom , it gets used more than my slr, as its more compact, and always in the car, and a lot of the time i prefer it for what i do.
It has no image stabilisation, so i'm getting a compact panasonic 10 x zoom, with image stabilisation ... its currently gone missing in the UK though !

I got an Ixus 75 off Ebay last week for my brother-in-law (seller was Citywide), cost approx 250 euros. I had a quick look before I gave it to him. It's absolutely tiny, I think has most manual controls, IQ is fantastic and best of all is the Face Detection technology. I was a little sceptical about this, but it's absolutely brilliant. Basically the little focus square follows a face, keeping it in focus, no matter where it is on the screen. Works for multiple faces, but I don't know how many.

all in all, a fantastic little P&S and a fantastic price - going for 100 more than that in town,...

    350D with a 50 1.8 :p

G7 would be a winner if it shot RAW...

Thanks Fajitas, i had decided on the g7 - canon loyalty and all that..it does seem a bit crazy that they have removed raw but that just means one less step in the workflow ;) - to be honest, having it shoot in raw was one of the least requirements..it does seem up there with IQ, colours and with good IS and video + its not the price of a Leica or the weight of the g6...
