    Hey guys,

I plugged my external hdd into the wall on friday and obviously didnt have it plugged in all the way so when i turned it on the light just flickered. a few times. I waited to the next day to try again and got a constant light from the from of the external (akasa) but the hdd did not seem to spin up. So i took it apart and put in another hdd,, and it spun up straight away. The old hdd also went into a pc to be used as a internal drive and never spun up.

What are my options to get the info on this hdd back. I cannot go to a data recovery company because of whats on the disk !

Are there any free tools out there i can use? Or am i screwed?

Any and all ideas are welcome!

    Thanks lads.

If the disk isn't spinning up, you're pretty f*cked. You can try the board replacement trick (i.e. get the circuit board from a similar drive and try that). Other than that, it's a specialist recovery firm you're looking at.

Seriously though, if you think a data recovery firm has never seen porn before or the warez we're all aware you have...well.... :P

Having recovered quite a few HD's in my time. It's my guess you fried the controller board. Check it closely for signs of damage altough it need not be visible. You'll need an identical controller board from the same series of drive. But your data should be ok.
