Setting up Surround Sound on the TV??!

Ok, I got a 32 inch Flatscreen CRT TV (I know, I know...) with only four connections, a video input (yellow and white - NO RED??) connection and a headphones connection as well as one SCART socket.

Now I want to get a surround sound/home cinema system for watching TV and DVDs, anyone know if using the headphones socket for this is any good or am I just pissing against the wind??

I want to hook up a system directly to the TV so that I get "normal" sound on both the TV and surround sound when watching DVD's.

I was looking at a system earlier today for a DVD Surround System and it only worked when you had the DVD player powered on. Then your man in the Currys said that with my TV, the only way to get surround sound would be to get a system I can hook up to the headphone port on the TV....

Can anyone give me any advice on this???

if you're using an all in one sytem you buy, the sound won't go to the tv, it will go from the the dvd player/amplifier straight to your speakers. IF you also want to hear the tv sound in 5.1, you need audio output from your tv. Best connection would be a line ouput, red/white, but it sounds like you don't have one. IN theory you can hook a headphone socket up as well, but the headphone is an amplfied output, and you'll have to be careful to get the signal levels to match. you probably don't want to turn up the volume on the headphone socket too high if hooking it up to the system

If you use the stereo headphone output, check that your surround sound system has Dolby Digital prologic II which allows the system to reproduce surround sound 5.1 from two channel audio.

You shouldn't have any problem finding a cable with 3.5mm connection on one end and red/white on the other.

I guess a new TV would be a start but theres nothing wrong with the TV I have!! I was just thinking, would connecting PC speakers to the headphones jack on the TV have the same effect??

That's the cable(go for as short a cable as is manageable, there's lot like that 4/5m long of pretty shoddy quality), PC speakers would have the same effect, but I'm not sure if you're looking for an immersive sound or a stereo sound or ???

it depends on the set up of both surround sound and tv, i have mioen rigged up through scart and it gives tv sound out through the surround sound, its depnedant upon two things
1 One of scart being and input/output
2 the surround sound being able to take a scart input for sound, a lot of the cheaper ones do, its just a mater of poking about at the specs on line.

don't think you'll be able to get dvd sound out through the tv unless you rig phono cables from an output on the dvd, to a scart adaptor and have a video in be it s-video or phone to take the picture. feel free to pm
